BASIC FUNcTIONS
The role of the Plant & Pipeline Technician in Training will be chosen based on previous applicable experience, including but not limited to:
- A Journeyman / Red Seal ticket as a Welder, Heavy Equipment Technician, and Pipefitter etc.
- Previous Hot Tapping experience on a minimum of 8” pipe
- Previous Oil and Gas-based supervisory experience
- Completion of the Red Flame Training program up to and including Hot Tap Assistant II
- Each candidate will be provided with specific training to ensure competency and a full understanding of RFI equipment, policies and procedures.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Industry-related training and/or tickets as shown above
- General knowledge of the oil and gas industry in relation to the services RFI provides
- Grade 12 or equivalency diploma is an asset or at the discretion of Management
- Previous Supervisory Experience
- The internal training for this position will be identified within the Red Flame Industries Training Matrix
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
- The Plant & Pipeline Technician in Training will report directly to the Operations Manager. In the field situation, the Plant & Pipeline Technician in Training will be directly supervised by a Sr. RFI Technician. The Plant & Pipeline Technician in Training must always follow the policies and procedures that are already in place in the Quality and Safety programs.
- Based on the requirements of the job, the Plant & Pipeline Technician in Training will have the authority over the Welder and Hot Tap Assistant while on the job.
AUTHORITY
The Plant & Pipeline Technician in Training has the authority to carry out all tasks as outlined by Sr. Plant & Pipeline Technicians, P & P Field Superintendent, or the Operations Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Top Five
- Take over all processes with basic jobs, including RFT’s
- Ability and willingness to participate in all jobs as required, whether in a lead or assistant role
- Review and load materials for upcoming jobs accurately
- Maintenance of equipment
- Maintain positive customer relations
Additional Responsibilities
- Complete all quality as well as health and safety forms as required
- Complete all drill-outs as required
- Additional management responsibilities regarding all paperwork and the applicable crew for the assigned jobs
- Have the ability to step into a truck for a short time to run jobs with an experienced crew (with an assistant that is at least a level two)
DUTIES
The Plant & Pipeline Technician in Training will be required to:
- Complete set up and bolt ups without direct supervision
- Operate spark test machine
- Demonstrate the ability to look after a crew and do all the required paperwork on job sites that have a technician acting as supervisor
- Demonstrate a general understanding of how to review paperwork (Engineering assessments, welding, and equipment procedures)
- Run RFT’s with another assistant without a technician on site
- Operate the spark test machine, which includes everything from the test burns to the recalibration of the machine
- Fill out and conduct the pre-job safety meetings
- Perform the pre-job requirements
- Complete the travel depth form, demonstrate the ability to come up with the measurements on their own and either compare with the technicians or have the technician check over
- Have the ability to start running the different tap machines and BOP system during drill-outs
- Other duties as required
HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure that all work is completed in compliance with all Red Flame Industries Health and Safety Policies
- Ensure that all field work is completed in compliance with Red Flame Industries, Customer, and Industrial Requirements
- Be responsible for hazard mitigation while adhering to PPE requirements for all sites
- Ensure that all field staff are responsible for all hazard mitigation as well as adhering to customer requirements and industrial regulations while on each work site
- Participate in the RFI health and safety program as necessary
MEASUREMENT OF PERFORMANCE
A Plant & Pipeline Technician in Training will be deemed to be performing in a satisfactory manner when the following have been met or exceeded.

- Completing training as outlined within the Training Handbook within the assigned 3 month period
- Revving technical sign off from experienced RFI Plant & Pipelne Technicians
