Position Overview:

The Teacher is responsible for teaching a variety of subjects across multiple grade levels, fostering academic growth and critical thinking in students. Develop and deliver lesson plans that align with provincial standards, promote an inclusive and supportive classroom environment, and incorporate First Nations culture and perspectives. The teacher supports students’ individual learning needs, collaborates with families and community members, and participates in extracurricular activities to enhance the overall educational experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Prepare and present course material to students following an approved curriculum.
  • Teach core subjects and electives, ensuring cultural relevance.
  • Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to incorporate Indigenous ways of learning.
  • Lead approved land-based learning opportunities.

Classroom and Student Support

  • Create a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Use positive behavior management strategies that support student well-being.
  • Promote a safe, nurturing, and respectful learning space.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group academic support.
  • Support students’ emotional, social, and academic growth through educational mentorship.
  • Assess students using culturally sensitive evaluation methods.
  • Develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with diverse needs.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with different departments to address student needs.
  • Work with other school staff, and community leaders to enhance school-based curriculum learning.
  • Build positive relationships with parents, guardians, and families.
  • Encourage student participation in community activities.
  • Actively participate in any school activities, field trips, staff, and community events.

Administrative and Other Responsibilities

  • Lead or support extracurricular programs (sports, arts, traditional skills).
  • Ensure compliance with school policies (attendance, academic integrity, health and safety).
  • Carry out additional duties or projects as assigned by the School Principal.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in education.
  • Master’s degree in education is an asset.
  • BC Teaching Certificate.
  • Prefer 2 years of recent teaching experience, preferably in a BC First Nation community.
  • Demonstrated competency in program development and implementation.

Knowledge, Skills and Expertise:

  • Understanding of First Nation education programs and FNESC / ISC policies.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in administrative and fiscal management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
  • Innovative and can work with minimal supervision.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must maintain a clear Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.
  • Must have a valid BC driver’s license with a clear driver’s abstract.
  • Must reside in Yekooche.

Employment Details:

Salary: $67,500-$99,500 (Negotiable based on education credentials and experience)

Work Location: Jean Marie Joseph School, Yekooche, BC

Schedule: Standard schedule is 70 hours per bi-weekly pay period. Regular hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a 40-minute unpaid lunch break. Pay day Friday is a half day (8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) and is included within the 70-hour bi-weekly schedule.
