Senior Project and Corporate Accountant
Location: Ellerslie
Hours: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Additional hours may be required during month-end, year-end, budgeting, or audit periods.
Physical Environment: Primarily office-based with occasional interaction with field operations. Extended periods of computer work.
Position Summary
The Senior Project and Corporate Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring the financial health and accuracy of Classic Landscapes. This position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, preparing financial reports, supporting budgeting and forecasting, maintaining internal controls, and providing financial analysis to support business decisions. Working closely with operations, project managers, payroll, and leadership, the accountant ensures accurate financial reporting, job costing, compliance with GAAP and continuous improvement of financial processes.
Job Summary and Duties:
Financial Reporting
· Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
· Complete month-end and year-end closing activities.
· Prepare journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations.
· Review general ledger transactions for accuracy and completeness.
· Analyze financial results and investigate variances.
· Assist with annual budgets and financial forecasts.
· Prepare management reports and financial dashboards
· Prepare cash flow forecasts
· Develop financial models for business planning.
· Provide recommendations to improve profitability and efficiency.
· Support payroll processing and reconciliation.
· Reconcile Bank and Credit Card Statements.
Project Accounting & Job Costing
· Monitor project costs and profitability.
· Prepare job costing reports for accuracy.
· Work closely with Operations and Project Managers regarding project budgets.
· Analyze labour, equipment, material, and subcontractor costs.
· Prepare work-in-progress reporting.
· Support contract billing and revenue recognition.
Accounts Payable & Receivable Oversight
· Oversee AP and AR processes.
· Review payment runs and vendor reconciliations.
· Prepare collections and aging reports and lead collections efforts.
· Resolve accounting discrepancies.
· Review inventory counts
Financial Controls & Compliance
· Maintain strong internal accounting controls.
· Ensure compliance with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) and tax regulations.
· Prepare GST filings.
· Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
Process Improvement
· Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes.
· Develop and document standard operating procedures.
· Support ERP and accounting software enhancements.
· Assist with automation initiatives.
Leadership & Collaboration
· Mentor junior accounting staff.
· Provide guidance to Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable personnel.
· Collaborate with Operations, HR, Procurement, and Executive Leadership.
· Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
Education
· Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce.
· Working towards CPA designation is preferred.
Experience
· 3–5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
· Experience in construction, landscaping, manufacturing, or project-based industries is considered an asset.
· Experience with job costing is preferred.
· Experience preparing financial statements.
· Experience supporting audits.
· Strong understanding of payroll accounting.
Required competencies/knowledge/skills/abilities:
· Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting principles (ASPE).
· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
· Experience with accounting and ERP systems (Odoo knowledge an asset)
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
· High attention to detail and accuracy.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
· Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
