Your Opportunity:
Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is seeking a strategic and experienced finance leader to join its Executive Leadership Team as Director, Finance. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will serve as APL’s senior financial authority and principal advisor on financial stewardship, organizational performance, planning, and risk. This role provides enterprise-wide leadership for financial governance, planning, and reporting in support of APL’s province-wide operations. Your expertise will support executive decision-making and Board governance, ensuring responsible management of public resources and organizational sustainability. As Director, Finance, you will lead APL’s corporate finance function, including financial planning, reporting, advisory services, and enterprise financial oversight, while operational leaders retain accountability for program delivery and operational budgets. You will guide finance leadership teams responsible for Corporate Finance and Advisory Services and Financial Planning and Risk Services, ensuring coordinated, high-quality financial services across clinical and operational portfolios. This role offers the opportunity to apply strategic thinking, sound judgment, and collaborative leadership in a complex environment, where your financial insight will shape organizational strategy, manage risk, and support system transformation across Alberta’s laboratory services. This position offers flexibility and may be performed remotely or in a hybrid arrangement within Alberta. APL is the sole provider of publicly funded laboratory services in Alberta, supporting medical decision-making across the continuum of care. As a wholly owned subsidiary of a provincial health agency, APL plays a critical role in improving health outcomes for Albertans through innovation and excellence in laboratory medicine.
Description:
The Director, Finance provides enterprise-wide financial leadership and stewardship for Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL). Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director serves as APL’s senior financial authority and principal advisor on financial management, organizational performance, financial planning, and risk. The role holds enterprise-level accountability for financial governance, planning, and reporting across APL. While operational leaders remain accountable for program delivery and day-to-day budget decisions, the Director, Finance is responsible for establishing, leading, and ensuring the effective delivery of APL’s corporate finance function. This includes financial stewardship frameworks, financial oversight, planning and forecasting, reporting integrity, and the provision of expert financial advice to support Executive Leadership Team decision-making and Board governance, ensuring responsible management of public resources. The Director leads finance management teams responsible for Corporate Finance and Advisory Services and Financial Planning and Risk Services, ensuring coordinated, high-quality financial services across operational and medical portfolios within Alberta’s publicly funded health system.

Required Qualifications:
A university degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline and/or a recognized professional accounting designation such as Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) in good standing, combined with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible senior level experience in financial management, planning, reporting, and corporate finance leadership within a large, complex organization. Demonstrated experience providing strategic financial leadership and advice to senior executives and governance bodies; leading enterprise finance functions including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audit coordination, and performance management; and operating effectively within complex, multi stakeholder environments. Proven ability to lead through subordinate managers, exercise sound professional judgment, manage financial risk, and support organizational change. Advanced analytical, communication, and influencing skills, with demonstrated expertise in Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), systems thinking, and translating complex financial analysis into strategic, decision ready recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced education in business administration, finance, leadership, or risk management (e.g., MBA or equivalent executive education), along with ongoing professional development related to governance, strategic planning, or public sector financial management. Experience within publicly funded laboratory, health care or broader public sector environments, including supporting Board or Audit & Finance Committee reporting, and operating within multi entity or shared service governance structures.
