The Opportunity

The City of St. John's is presently recruiting for the full-time temporary position of Environmental Service Operator – Sewerjet with the Water and Wastewater Division. This position will be effective April 2026 until November 28, 2026.

Accountabilities

  • Clean sanitary and storm sewer pipes, manholes, catch basins/inlets, storm outfalls, and

residential laterals using sewer jet.

  • Use camera system to inspect sanitary and storm sewer pipes, manholes, and residential

sewer laterals.

  • Record defects and other conditions identified in the sanitary and sewer systems or

residential sewer laterals.

  • Repair and maintain sanitary and storm sewers, and associated infrastructure.
  • Repair and maintain sanitary, storm sewer and water service laterals.
  • Conduct inspections of catch basins, headwalls, and spillways, including removal of

debris.

  • Provide electronic, written or verbal reports as required.
  • Interpret plans as required to carry out works.
  • Estimate job materials as required to carry out the works.
  • Locate and trace existing infrastructure as required.
  • Maintain and service Infrastructure Division equipment as required.
  • Clear or shovel snow from hydrants. Thaw hydrants and house services as required.
  • Assist with the lifting of large objects such as valves, valve boxes, manhole, and catch

basin covers, valve keys, generators, pumps, pipes, etc.

  • Operate water valves.
  • Perform necessary labour work in performance of duties.
  • Use jackhammer when repairing or installing water and sewer infrastructure.
  • Perform driving duties as required.
  • Carry out safety procedures as required for the duties
  • Other duties as assigned

The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications

Candidates must possess High School Diploma or equivalent.

Three (3) years experience in construction and/or maintenance of underground water and sewer infrastructure where the primary and most common task performed by the applicant involves physical infrastructure installation and/or repairs (typically performed in a trench).

The successful applicant will be required to obtain certification as Class I Water Distribution Operator and Class I Wastewater Collection Operator. The applicant will be required to enroll in the first available courses for each certification upon obtaining the necessary prerequisites for the course.

Must possess a valid Class 5 Drivers License.

During the selection process, applicants must complete a written test on topics related to construction and/or maintenance of underground water and sewer infrastructure as well as a Cognitive Abilities Test.

This position is classified as safety sensitive. The City of St. John’s has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.

Physical Requirements

Applicants must be medically certified to be able to safely wear a respirator. Must remain clean shaven while working in this classification.

Hours of Work

Weekend Shift Friday to Monday 8:00am to 6:00pm
