Position Summary

The Custodial/Maintenance person is responsible for a variety of duties related to the cleaning and upkeep of the University’s buildings and fixtures. A responsive, community focused approach is required to ensure that facilities are maintained at an optimal level. This position exists to provide a clean, orderly, safe and functional facility that will aid in the stability of maintaining higher educational proficiency.

Accountabilities

Perform custodial duties necessary to keep assigned building and facilities clean and in a desirable

condition:

Cleans, dusts and mops using either a wet or dry mop
Polishes floors, walls, windows, furniture, washrooms and fixtures in the building
Empties waste containers and recycling bins, removes waste from building to outside containers
Vacuums carpets and removes garbage from floors and fixtures (this may include the use of
heavy carpet cleaning equipment.)
Cleaning residence rooms and completing conference turnovers as directed
Snow removal around entrance ways, lawn maintenance, unloading and transferring of supplies
and equipment, moving and re-arranging furniture and equipment
Clean light fixtures; replace lights, bulbs, and fluorescent tubes as necessary;
Move, arrange, and set up classroom and office equipment, supplies, and furniture; inventory
equipment and furniture at site locations; set up rooms for meetings, assembly, university events,
etc
Requests supplies in a timely manner to ensure adequate levels are maintained at all times
Compliance and understanding of procedures relating to infection control and effective cleaning
methods
The safe handling of chemical to avoid either personal injury, exposure to others or damage to
equipment
Performs other duties as required

Performs Maintenance functions for the facilities:
Complies with all university policies and procedures and with all applicable provincial and federal laws and regulations (WHMIS and OHSA)
Maintenance of light bulbs and fluorescent tubes. This may involve working on ladders
Reports infractions of regulations and policies to the Area Manager: Custodial Services; examples are non-compliance with the fire code, environmental health and safety policies and student behaviour which may lead to accidents or injuries
Reports required repairs to facilities and equipment to the Area Manager: Custodial Services
Responsible for opening and closing the building(s) as required
Maintains grounds including but limited to weeding, parking lot maintenance, landscaping and snow removal as required
Installation of parking signs
Performs minor maintenance duties to the campus facilities (example, drywall patching and painting)
Other duties as required.

Maintaining schedule during harsh weather

Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in custodial duties
Knowledge of the safe application of chemicals and products used in cleaning and sanitizing
General knowledge of the techniques, tools and materials used in performing custodial tasks.
An understanding of WHIMIS
Team work – ability to work in a team environment with a minimum of supervision. Shares information with team members. Is collaborative in dealing with students, faculty, staff and fellow employees
Receptive to change – can adapt to changing circumstances. Makes suggestions for improvement
Respects diversity- treats others with respect. Is understanding. Avoids unnecessary conflict
Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
Health and Safety Experience an asset
Flexibility to work weekends as required
Opportunities available to volunteer to participate in the on-call rotation

Compensation:

Rate of Pay: $24.56 per hour

Hours of Work: This is a full time, Continuing position. Tehe normal hours of work are Sunday to Thursday 05:00 am – 11:30 am.
