Job Overview:
The Certified Prosthetist (and/or Orthotist) is responsible for providing prosthetic care to West Park Healthcare Centre and Workplace Safety Insurance Board clients to enable them to function better.
Accountabilities:
Provide comprehensive patient care to clients with partial or total absence of a limb by assessing, estimate creation designing, fabricating, fitting, aligning, adjusting, maintaining and repairing artificial limbs known as “prostheses”. This involves liaising with the Amputee Rehabilitation and Ambulatory Clinic teams to advise on issues related to prosthetic care.
Provide patient care to clients with neurological/muscular and/or skeletal disorders by evaluating, designing, fitting and aligning an appropriate orthotic device. Liaise with physicians and therapists on issues related to orthotic care.
Provide client education, training and follow-up visits. Reassessing function of the device and making adjustments when necessary to ensure optimal functional use of the device and referring patients back to Ambulatory Clinic for medical concerns.
Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and ambulatory clinics to as prosthetic/orthotic subject matter experts and ADP authorizer.
Provide detailed cost estimates for clients. Liaising with and providing supporting documentation for external funding agencies as needed.
Ensure that technical fabrication of devices are as prescribed by communicating any specific details to the Prosthetic/Orthotic Technician.
Ensure on-going client follow-up and billing by maintaining timely and accurate client records.
Repair devices and order prosthetic componentry as necessary.
Assist in promotion of the department as directed by manager.
Provide technical assistance where appropriate and necessary at the request of the production coordinator or manager
Perform any other duties that are deemed relevant to the position at the manager request.
Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians and visitors including:
Compliance with the safety standards of the hospital and applicable legislation
Identification and prevention of safety issues and problems
Taking corrective action, where possible
Attendance at safety meetings/training/updates in accordance with the Centre’s standards
Ability to work in a manner that exemplifies the core values of West Park: Excellence, Respect, Trust, Collaboration and Accountability.
Evidence of good performance history, attendance record.
Key Qualifications:
Graduate of a recognized post graduate clinical prosthetic and orthotic program is required
