Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Job Type: Full-Time or Part-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

Position Summary

We are seeking compassionate, dependable, and dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to provide person-centered care and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a DSP, you will empower individuals to live as independently as possible by assisting with daily living activities, community engagement, personal growth, and health and wellness.

This position typically supports 4–6 individuals in a residential setting or up to 10 individuals in community-based or periodic programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Care & Individual Support

  • Provide individualized support according to each person’s service plan.
  • Assist with activities of daily living, including personal care, hygiene, dressing, and meal preparation.
  • Support individuals with socialization, communication, behavioral development, and life skills.
  • Encourage independence through community participation, recreation, shopping, transportation, financial management, and citizenship activities.
  • Foster respectful, positive, and professional relationships with individuals served, family members, guardians, and interdisciplinary team members.

Health & Safety

  • Monitor individuals’ health and report concerns promptly.
  • Administer or assist with medication administration, as assigned, following company policies and state regulations.
  • Accompany individuals to medical appointments when needed and communicate medical information appropriately.
  • Follow healthcare plans, emergency procedures, infection control practices, and universal precautions.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and healthy living environment.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services, progress notes, medication records, and incident reports.
  • Protect the confidentiality and rights of individuals receiving services.
  • Report suspected abuse, neglect, injuries, or other incidents according to agency policies and state regulations.
  • Complete all required training and maintain compliance with company and regulatory standards.

Household & Transportation

  • Perform routine housekeeping to maintain a clean and safe home environment.
  • Prepare meals according to dietary guidelines and individual preferences.
  • Safely transport individuals to appointments, recreational activities, employment, and community outings when required.
  • Conduct basic household safety checks and report maintenance concerns.

Teamwork & Professionalism

  • Attend required training sessions, staff meetings, and continuing education.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Collaborate effectively with supervisors and team members to provide high-quality support.
  • Promote a safe workplace by following all safety policies and procedures.

QualificationsMinimum Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High School Diploma or GED required (preferred where applicable)
  • Six (6) months of experience in human services is preferred
  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Current vehicle registration and insurance if transporting individuals
  • Ability to meet company driving requirements
  • Complete all required state and company training and certifications within required timeframes

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform Heavy Work, including:
  • Lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds frequently
  • Lifting or moving up to 20 pounds continuously
  • Ability to assist individuals with mobility, transfers, and personal care as needed.

Work Environment

This position is based in residential and community settings and requires regular travel within the community to support individuals in daily activities, appointments, employment, and recreational opportunities.

Additional Requirements (New Jersey)

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license in good standing (New Jersey or state of residence if commuting).
  • Successfully complete pre-employment and random drug screenings.
  • Pass all required criminal background checks, Department of Human Services clearances, Central Registry of Offenders Against Individuals with Developmental Disabilities, and Child Abuse Registry Information (CARI) checks.
  • Successfully complete and demonstrate proficiency in all required training.
  • Cooperate with all licensing and Department of Human Services inspections, inquiries, and investigations.

Pay: $9.50 – $10.00 per hour

Expected hours: 24 – 40 per week
