Overview

Architectural Sheet Metal Lead Hand Jobs in Kelowna at Laing Roofing

Lead From the Front. Build Great Work. Develop Great People.

LAING is looking for an Architectural Sheet Metal Lead Hand to join our growing team.

This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in quality workmanship, enjoys helping others succeed, and is ready to take the next step in their career as a leader within the trade.

Whether you are an experienced Lead Hand, a Journeyman looking for your first formal leadership opportunity, or an experienced tradesperson who naturally mentors and supports others on site, we would like to hear from you.

At LAING, we recognize that leadership does not always mean becoming a Foreman.

Some people aspire to manage projects, coordinate manpower, and take on the administrative responsibilities that come with running a project. Others find the greatest satisfaction working alongside their crews, teaching apprentices, solving technical challenges, and helping ensure work is completed safely and to a high standard.

Both career paths are valuable.

Why Join LAING?

LAING is continuing to grow across British Columbia, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Western Canada by pursuing larger, more complex commercial roofing, architectural sheet metal, wall systems, and building envelope projects.

As we grow, we are committed to building strong leaders at every level of the organization—not just Foremen and Superintendents.

We believe some of the most important leaders on a jobsite are the people working directly alongside the crew every day. The individuals who answer questions, train apprentices, set the standard for workmanship, reinforce safety expectations, and help create a positive team culture.

At LAING, Lead Hands play a critical role in the success of our projects and the development of our people.

This role is designed for individuals who want to continue growing their technical skills, leadership abilities, and influence within the company while remaining actively involved in the trade.

Whether your goal is to eventually move into a Foreman position or to become an exceptional Lead Hand and mentor within the field, we are committed to helping you continue developing your skills and career.

This is a company for people who:

  • Take pride in quality workmanship
  • Enjoy helping others learn and succeed
  • Want to work on technically challenging projects
  • Value accountability, professionalism, and communication
  • Care about safety and building strong teams
  • Want long-term opportunity and career growth
  • Enjoy being hands-on and actively involved in the work
  • Want to continue developing as leaders

What we offer:

  • Competitive compensation based on experience, ability, and qualifications
  • Paid overtime when operationally required
  • Extended health and dental benefits
  • RRSP matching program
  • Structured leadership development opportunities
  • Mentorship from experienced Foremen, Superintendents, and company leaders
  • Opportunities to participate in leadership development meetings and training programs
  • Exposure to complex commercial roofing, architectural sheet metal, wall systems, and building envelope projects
  • Stable, year-round work with a company committed to long-term growth

As a Lead Hand, you will remain actively involved in the work while helping support crew members, maintain quality standards, reinforce safe work practices, and assist the Foreman in keeping projects running smoothly.

Whether your long-term goal is becoming a Foreman, Superintendent, or Project Manager, or becoming an exceptional Lead Hand and mentor within the trade, LAING provides opportunities for growth, leadership development, and long-term career success.

What Success Looks Like in This Role

Successful Lead Hands at LAING are known for the crews they help develop.

They lead by example, set high standards, and earn the respect of their teams through their work ethic, attitude, technical ability, and willingness to help others succeed.

They are often the first person an apprentice turns to with a question and the person a Foreman relies on to help ensure quality, safety, and productivity remain on track.

A successful Lead Hand:

  • Works alongside the crew and leads by example
  • Takes pride in producing high-quality workmanship
  • Coaches, mentors, and develops apprentices and newer workers
  • Helps create a positive and professional job site culture
  • Supports the Foreman in maintaining production, safety, and quality standards
  • Identifies problems early and helps find practical solutions
  • Promotes accountability through actions rather than authority
  • Takes ownership of their work and helps others improve theirs
  • Maintains strong relationships with crew members, Foremen, and project teams
  • Continues developing both technical and leadership skills

The strongest Lead Hands understand that their success is measured not only by the work they complete, but by the people they help develop along the way.

What You Can Expect at LAING

LAING continues to grow across British Columbia, the Yukon, and Western Canada by pursuing larger, more complex commercial roofing, architectural sheet metal, wall systems, and building envelope projects.

As we grow, we remain committed to investing in our people. We believe strong crews are built by strong leaders, and strong leaders are developed through experience, mentorship, training, and support.

As a Lead Hand at LAING, you can expect to remain actively involved in the trade while continuing to build your leadership abilities. This is not a position where you are removed from the work. Lead Hands work alongside their crews, help solve problems, support quality workmanship, reinforce safety expectations, and help develop the next generation of tradespeople.

You will work closely with experienced Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, Safety, HR, and Senior Leadership who are committed to helping our people succeed.

At LAING, we recognize that leadership development is an ongoing process. We provide opportunities for Lead Hands to continue growing their communication skills, technical knowledge, leadership abilities, and understanding of the construction industry.

Whether your long-term goal is becoming a Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager, or simply becoming one of the strongest Lead Hands and mentors in the industry, we want to help you achieve that goal.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to work on complex commercial roofing, architectural sheet metal, wall systems, and building envelope projects across British Columbia and the Yukon

  • Leadership development opportunities designed to help you grow both personally and professionally
  • Opportunities to train, mentor, and develop apprentices and newer workers
  • A team-oriented environment focused on professionalism, accountability, safety, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement

  • Stable, year-round work with a company committed to long-term growth

What It Takes to Succeed at LAING

Strong candidates often bring a combination of the following skills, experiences, and qualities:

  • Experience within the Architectural Sheet Metal, building envelope, commercial roofing, cladding, or related construction industries
  • Strong technical understanding of the trade and a commitment to producing high-quality workmanship
  • A positive attitude and willingness to lead by example
  • The ability to coach, support, and develop apprentices and less experienced team members
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to safety, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement
  • The ability to remain organized, productive, and solutions-focused under pressure
  • A willingness to accept feedback, continue learning, and develop as both a tradesperson and leader
  • The ability to work collaboratively with crew members, Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, and other stakeholders
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required
  • Previous Lead Hand experience is considered an asset but is not required.

We recognize that many strong leaders are already demonstrating leadership qualities without holding a formal leadership title. Some of the best Lead Hands are individuals who consistently set the standard through their work ethic, attitude, technical ability, and willingness to help others succeed.

At LAING, we are looking for people who are ready to take the next step in their careers, as well as experienced Lead Hands who want to continue growing within a company that values leadership, mentorship, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.

The people who tend to succeed at LAING are those who:

  • Lead by example rather than by authority
  • Take pride in producing quality work and helping others do the same

  • Take safety seriously and help create a safe work environment for everyone
  • Remain humble, teachable, and open to learning
