Responsibilities
About This Opportunity
Under the supervision of the Recreation Therapist, mentors will meet with a youth once a week at a recreation facility within the city of Calgary, or via virtual online platform. Mentors will enthusiastically participate in various leisure activities (both physical and stationary) based on a youths interests and treatment goals. Following each meeting, mentors will write a progress note documenting details of the intervention. It would be helpful for mentors to be available Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Mentors must have a means of transportation and a stable internet connection. Of note, all mentors must complete a Police Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check.
Helpful Skills
- Knowledge of youth services and recreation opportunities within Calgary
- Understanding of the Youth Criminal Justice Act
- CPR and First Aid Training
Time Commitment
Upon applying for the position, applicants will be offered an interview to ensure a best fit for the FAP. If successful, the applicant will be offered a recreation therapy mentor position. The applicant will receive information from AHS Volunteer Services regarding onboarding documentation. All new mentors will attend an online orientation through Volunteer Services and complete an online Suicide Intervention training. New mentors will attend approximately 12hrs of in person training to support learning and preparation for a youth match. Additional training opportunities may be offered. It is important to note a significant amount of time may pass from your initial application to the FAP, to attending training, to your first youth match. Therefore, a minimum 1yr commitment is required.
