General Information:

Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.

A temporary full time Utility Worker II position, up to six (6) months, is available working out of Kerry Park Recreation, within the South Cowichan Facilities Section of the Facilities & Transit Division. Reporting to the Manager, Facility Operations (South Cowichan), the Utility Worker II is responsible for the cleanliness, sanitation, housekeeping and maintenance of the facilities and grounds. Main duties include cleaning, room and equipment set-ups and tear-downs, ice and facilities maintenance, grounds work, sports field facility maintenance, and incidental security work.

Qualifications:

Secondary School graduation or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

A minimum of one (1) year of experience in cleaning, housekeeping and facility and grounds maintenance is required. One (1) year of experience working in a trade (carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing etc.) is also required.

WHMIS certification

– provided by the employer

Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent

Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License

A Refrigeration Operator Certificate or an Ice Facility Operator Certificate would be assets

Building Service Worker Certificate would be an asset

Ice Making Courses would be an asset

Hours of Work:

This position works 40 hours per week on a rotating shift basis. Due to the nature of the work, it will be necessary to work a variety of shifts including days, nights, and weekends. Days off will change with the rotating schedule. The rotating shifts may be subject to change to meet operational requirements.

Salary:

Wage rate in 3 steps as per the Collective Agreement between the CVRD and CUPE Local 358, $32.07 – $33.00 – $33.96 per hour (2024 rates). Benefits are offered as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
