Exploring Imaging in the 21st Century

Job Description

Summary:

To be considered for the position, applicants must meet the following conditions:

Achieved a minimum grade of A in RADS 301 in previous years.

Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at UBC during the term of appointment.

Must be available to assist in person during the lecture times (Monday, Wednesday and Friday 2-2:50 pm).

Must maintain professional behavior and uphold UBC’s standards of conduct while representing the course and department.

Must disclose any other TA positions or conflicting responsibilities before accepting the offer.

Must be comfortable using online platforms such as Canvas, Zoom, and Kahoot.

Must be legally eligible to work in Canada for the full duration of the appointment and able to provide valid documentation (e.g., SIN or study permit for international students).

Must reside in British Columbia for the entirety of the appointment period.

Upon receiving an offer, must confirm acceptance with both the department and course instructor within 10 days.

Must be available to attend mandatory TA training, which will take place during the first week of the term.

Must complete all onboarding steps in Workday (UBC’s HR and Finance system) after the appointment is processed.

Organizational Status:

The TA will be working under the direct supervision of the Rads 301 teaching team within the Department of Radiology, collaborating with faculty, instructors and staff. The role will report directly to Office Manager.

Consequences or Error/Judgement

This position represents the University of British Columbia, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Department of Radiology in interactions with students, faculty, and staff. As such, the Teaching Assistant is expected to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion at all times. Errors in judgment—such as inappropriate communication with students, mishandling of confidential information, or failure to follow course policies—can negatively impact the learning environment, compromise academic integrity, and damage the reputation of the program and institution.

The TA is responsible for managing assigned duties (e.g., grading, student support, tutorials) in a timely and accurate manner. Inconsistent or negligent performance may result in student dissatisfaction, academic appeals, or disruption to course delivery.

Supervision Received:

The Teaching Assistant will work under the general direction of the Course Coordinator and Instructors. While expected to carry out responsibilities independently, the TA will receive regular guidance and feedback from the instructor(s) regarding course content, grading, and student engagement.

Supervision Given:

This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities. However, the TA may provide informal guidance or support to students during tutorials, office hours, and via online communication platforms. In some cases, the TA may assist in coordinating peer discussion groups or helping student groups stay on task.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong understanding and mastery of the course content.

Demonstrated ability to support and enhance student learning.

Clear and logical communication of complex topics.

Ability to manage course logistics on Canvas, including uploading materials, tracking grades, and assisting with online course tools.

Ability to act as a liaison between students and the teaching team, facilitating clear communication and helping address student questions or concerns.

Ability to support student development in key skill areas, including verbal and written communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, leadership, and organization.
