Sociology of the Body(Spring/Summer 2024 Semester: 7/2/2024 – 8/9/2024; Tuesday and Thursday: 3:10 PM – 6:10 PM; In-Person)
COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
Embodiment is a process in which social meaning is taken into or upon the physical body. Experiences of embodiment are layered, nuanced, and multifaceted resulting in the segmenting of bodies into attributes that are gendered, racialized, disabled, aged, etc. This can contribute to a sense of fragmentation, alienation, or “disappearance” of the physical body as a whole. Students will investigate techniques sociologists use to explore embodiment and consciousness of the physical body using the following considerations: what embodiment replaces, how embodiment affects lived experiences, and how the physical body, despite all this, surfaces in the lived experience of social life.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Meet regularly with the faculty and students on grading, course content and other matters as needed; assist in the evaluation of student work, using criteria established by the supervising faculty; work with faculty and other academic staff in support of the University’s educational goals and objectives; participate in the provision of a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities.
