Here’s how a superintendent for WCPG contributes to our team:
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
- Manages assigned construction project sites for WCPG Construction Ltd clients under limited supervision and in conjunction with the Project Manager (PM).
- Ensures construction and safety standards are met on all projects.
- Exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties.
- Exercises tact and courtesy in contacts with vendors, contractors, and clients.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Sets up the Site Office, installing appropriate WCPG Construction Ltd signage, equipment and first aid supplies. Coordinates the ordering of site services with PM.
- Establishes and maintains a positive relationship with neighbours, including the distribution of business cards and notification when any upcoming site activities may cause abnormally high noise or other major inconvenience.
- Provides a work environment that stimulates and supports subordinates.
- In conjunction with the PM, communicates staffing needs with the Director of Human Resources & Administration (D-HR&A) throughout the project.
- Manages and directs all site personnel – assigning work, supervising, and taking responsibility for their performance. Brings personnel problems to the attention of the D-HR&A and makes written reports where appropriate.
- Reads and interprets plans and specifications as provided by the Architects and Consultants, providing clarification to employees and trade contractors as necessary. Identifies problem areas and brings them to the attention of the PM, Architects and Consultants promptly and with a suggested course of action.
- Assists PM in developing a scope of work for tendering purposes and for the issuance of Purchase Orders. Identifies items to be detailed in Change Orders or to be back-charged to trades when necessary.
- Directs and coordinates the work of all trade contractors, establishing schedule, workflow, and priorities. Assists in resolving layout and trade coordination problems, ensuring performance according to contract terms and reports problems to the PM.
- Provides clarification where required for PM to approve job cost invoices.
- In concert with the PM, completes the project according to the pre-determined and agreed budget, schedule, and quality parameters. In conjunction with the PM, monitors project budget and advises on potential cost overruns and cost savings.
- Ensures that all deliveries to the site have been verified for accuracy in quantity and measurement and that all quality problems or damage have been appropriately noted prior to signing the delivery slip.
- Orders/picks up miscellaneous site supplies and rental tools as required. Rentals to be returned promptly after use.
- Records all daily activities and prepares a daily site report throughout the duration of the project. Takes photographic records of job progress.
- Provides time records to PM or completes timesheets for PM’s approval, tracking work against change orders or back charge items as required.
- Coordinates necessary inspections and occupancy permits.
- Participates in all consultant/client/trade meetings.
- Assists PM in bill collecting when necessary.
- Prepares hit lists/deficiency lists as necessary and assigns resources for completion of same.
- Maintains workplace health and safety by ensuring that workers perform their work safely, and that all employees/visitors/neighbours/clients are safe when visiting the site. This includes:
- a) Implementing all safety policies and procedures on site including worker and contractor orientations, weekly site safety inspections and toolbox talks as per the OH&S Manual.
- b) Ensuring that workers are appropriately trained in the safe performance of their work.
- c) Identifying and correcting hazardous acts and conditions.
- d) Conducting regular safety inspections.
- e) Conducting incident investigations.
- f) Enforcing all safety rules, regulations, and instructions.
- g) Ensuring employees wear proper clothing and use the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- h) Ensuring that appropriate tools, equipment, and materials are available and used.
- i) Maintaining appropriate OH & S records.
- j) Providing leadership and setting a good example for employees.
- k) Identifying workers with personal problems that could affect safety at the worksite.
20. Ensures weekly safety checklists and training records are completed and submitted to Head Office every week without exception.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Dedicated to quality and service.
2. Has a good working knowledge of MS Word and Excel, and familiarity with MS Project and Procore.
3. Exhibits self-motivation, pays attention to details and is extremely well organized.
4. Must possess and practice excellent interpersonal, communication, team management and problem-solving skills.
5. MUST work well under pressure.
6. Stays abreast of all relevant construction and building codes, standards, and regulations.
7. Works productively and harmoniously with others consistently, always maintaining a professional demeanour.
8. Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
9. Must maintain Level 1 Occupational First Aid certificate.
ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIRED:
1. Site trailers.
2. This position requires a high degree of personal contact, with constant multitasking and a high degree of stress.
3. May have to assist with carpentry and other manual labour tasks on occasion.
4. Long hours and/or weekend work may be required at times to maintain a project schedule.
