Reporting to the Manager of Crushing and Transportation, the Stockpiling and Shiploading Superintendent is accountable for the safe and efficient operation of stockpiling iron ore at Milne port and shipping budgeted tonnes of iron ore during the shipping season.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Promote and assure safe and efficient use of all equipment operations in a manner that will minimize equipment downtime.
  • Oversee stockpiling operation (Front-end loaders, skidsteers, belt conveyor stackers) at Milne Port.
  • Oversee reclaim and shiploading operation during vessel shipping season (July-October)
  • Oversee maintenance plan and execution of stackers, feeders, jump conveyors, and shiploader to ensure high machine availability.
  • Consistently and equitably apply all BIM policies procedures; inculcate, support and verify safe and efficient work practices by visible, felt and engaging leadership.
  • Ensure compliance to operating plans and provide in-spec quality vessel shipments.
  • Execute project strategies and schedules in order to meet BIM operational plans and vessel shipping schedules.
  • Provide technical/operational oversight on capital projects pertaining to assigned equipment.
  • Develop and execute daily crew schedules and track progress against plan of stockpiling and shiploading activities.
  • Report on incidents and investigate according to policy.
  • Verify that appropriate field level risk assessments, JHAs and other risk control tools are used for every job.
  • Manage recruitment and personnel for the department, including rotation scheduling, performance reviews, vacation and disciplinary issues.
  • Monitor the performance of those doing the work, and take action to improve the capability of the team to meet future needs through the development or selection of personnel.
  • Communicate to management any technical deviations and risks within area of expertise and coordinate corrective measures.
  • Develop and implement the strategies and operating plans for the group that take into account targets and related actions for improvement in accident prevention, environmental performance, production, output quality, production costs, and capital expenditures.
  • Analyze trends in safety, environment, production, and quality performance, as well as the consumption of resources, and implement actions to address negative variances, or to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
  • Correspond and manage relationships and services of vendors/manufacturers
  • Monitor production performance to ensure that processes are in place both to maintain department and equipment to sustain/build productive capability, and to meet the targets outlined in the Business Plan.
  • Contribute to the LOMs plans by contributing to the 5 year plan as it relates to cost reduction and sustaining capital requirements.
  • Support the development of the annual budget and 5-year operating / capital plans.
  • Provide input and work collaboratively with peers and other departments to achieve capital, production and/or maintenance projects/schedules.

Main Qualifications:

  • Minimum of then (10) years of experience in open pit mining (Direct or indirect), construction, bulk handling or shiploading (Direct)
  • 5 years of experience in a supervisory role
  • 3 years of capital project management experience
  • Experience with planning and scheduling equipment and human resources.
  • Experience with the planning and development of production plans.
  • Experience in a Fly-in, fly-out operation
  • Experience in the Arctic is an asset
  • Experience working with aboriginal people and communities is an asset.
  • College diploma in Mining, Civil, Construction, or Mechanical
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Civil, Construction, or Mechanical is an asset
  • Certified Professional Shift Boss or Supervisor in Nunavut
  • Digital Literacy skills: Knowledge of digital tools and technology. Proficient with standard office software such as Microsoft Office. Advanced knowledge of SAP maintenance systems.
  • Communication skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both written and verbal, for conveying ideas, instructions, and information to colleagues, external parties, and superiors.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness skills: Ability to influence the views and behaviour of others through persuasion and encouragement and manage conflict or other sensitive issues tactfully and effectively. Ability to adapt behaviour to a wide range of people.
  • Leadership/Management skills: Ability to organise and direct workflow, operations, and employees to meet company goals. Ability to motivate others, provide guidance, and set team direction, while creating an environment that lets employees work efficiently and productively.
  • Time Management/Organisation skills: Ability to efficiently manage time and prioritize tasks to ensure that work is completed effectively and deadlines are met.
  • Planning skills: Ability to set priorities, plan the efficient use of resources, responds effectively to unforeseen events and achieve results in a quality, timely, and cost-effective way.
  • Problem Solving/ Decision Making skills: Ability to define a problem; determine the cause of the problem; identify, prioritize, and reach logical conclusions, and decide on appropriate plan of action.
