Job Summary

The Steel Bridge Worker is responsible for contributing to Brides and Structures and work outside to assist with and replace or repair worn or broken components. In addition, the incumbent participates in fabricating and building new components for timber, concrete, and steel railway structures, including bridges and culverts.

Major

Responsibilities

Fabricate, assemble, and build timber, concrete, and steel railway bridge components

Use various common and specialized hand and power tools

Prepare and carry out minor maintenance of tools for assigned work

Remove and replace defective bridge, culvert, and other structural components

Load, unload, sort, shovel, and distribute various materials

Clean-up after work completion

Operate Hirail boom truck to load, transport, and unload bridge, as well as culvert material on road and rail

Working Conditions

Must be

able to work in a unionized environment as a crew member to perform various maintenance, repair, and replacement tasks, in a safety-sensitive environment around heavy moving equipment outdoors in all weather conditions

The role is exposed to harsh outdoor weather conditions such as heat and cold, as well as noisy surroundings

Capable of working in various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Required to work away from home, sometimes for extended periods of time

Ability to

lift from 50 to 85 lbs

Capable of climbing and working at heights using fall protection equipment

Requirements

Experience in structural environments

Experience in physical labour, including lifting and occasional heavy lifting

Completion of high school or a General

Education

Diploma (GED)

Attend, pass, and maintain applicable training such as timber, crane, Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR), Track Inspection Guidelines (TIG), National Safety Code (NSC), and steel

Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certified Welder

Class 3 Driver’s License with air endorsement or equivalent in the province of residence

Physical labour experience is a definite asset including lifting, occasional heavy lifting

Ability to

read and understand detailed drawings and sketches for various types of repair work and new construction

Ability to

follow strict guidelines concerning safe work practices

Knowledge of cleaning, fabrication, installation, repairs, and maintenance of steel and concrete structures, as well as culverts

Any experience/

education

/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset

Training

The position is required to attend classroom and

on-the-job training
