Wellness Counter is a refined Japanese restaurant in Boulder centered around sushi, seasonal cuisine, thoughtful technique, and hospitality-driven service. Our kitchen program focuses on precision, organization, ingredient quality, and consistency across both hot and cold preparation.

We are seeking a Sous Chef / Kitchen Manager to join our leadership team and help oversee daily kitchen operations, systems, prep execution, service standards, and team development.

This is a leadership role for someone who thrives in a disciplined, detail-oriented environment and is capable of balancing hands-on execution with operational management.

ResponsibilitiesKitchen Operations

  • Oversee daily kitchen operations and service execution
  • Maintain consistency in quality, preparation, seasoning, and presentation
  • Ensure smooth communication between kitchen, sushi counter, and front-of-house teams
  • Lead service with professionalism, urgency, organization, accountability, and a no-ego team mentality

Prep & Production Management

  • Build and maintain efficient prep systems and workflows
  • Oversee production schedules, station organization, and pars
  • Ensure proper labeling, rotation, storage, and sanitation standards
  • Monitor product quality and maintain consistency across all stations

Inventory & Cost Control

  • Assist with ordering, receiving, and inventory management
  • Monitor food cost, waste, yields, and kitchen efficiency
  • Maintain organized storage areas and receiving procedures
  • Work closely with leadership on operational improvements

Team Leadership

  • Train, mentor, and develop kitchen staff
  • Help maintain a respectful, accountable, and high-performing kitchen culture
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and staff scheduling
  • Set expectations for cleanliness, professionalism, and execution

Health & Safety

  • Maintain health department and food safety standards
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization throughout all kitchen areas
  • Uphold proper handling procedures for seafood, proteins, and prepared products

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of leadership experience in a professional kitchen
  • Strong organizational and operational skills
  • Experience managing prep systems and high-standard service execution
  • Ability to lead calmly and effectively under pressure
  • Strong understanding of kitchen sanitation and food safety
  • Experience with Japanese cuisine or refined seasonal cooking preferred
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and busy services

Compensation

$58,000–$70,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
