Makkinga Contractors is currently seeking a Skilled Pipelayer / Lead Hand (Working Foreman) based out of Onigaming First Nation, Ontario, with the ability to work on projects throughout Northwestern Ontario. This role is ideal for an experienced pipelayer who not only brings strong technical ability, but also leadership skills to guide a crew and help ensure efficient, safe, and productive job sites.

Job Description
A Skilled Pipelayer / Lead Hand plays a vital role in both hands-on construction work and crew supervision, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to specification.
Technical Responsibilities
- Installation of pipes for water, sewage, and drainage systems
- Excavation and preparation of trenches to proper specifications
- Reading and interpreting blueprints for accurate pipe placement
- Pipe assembly using appropriate materials and techniques
- Inspection of completed work for leaks, defects, and compliance
- Maintenance and repair of existing systems
- Operating heavy equipment and job site tools
- Grade setting using manual and laser methods
- Water system work including mains, valves, hydrants, and fixtures
- Sewer system work including storm, sanitary systems, manholes, and catch basins
- Use of tools such as jackhammers, rock drills, power saws, pumps, etc.
Lead Hand / Working Foreman Responsibilities
- Lead, supervise, and work alongside a crew to meet daily production goals
- Monitor and track crew hours, productivity, and job progress
- Use mobile applications for time entry, approvals, reporting, and communication
- Conduct and document daily safety meetings & hazard assessments
- Ensure compliance with all site safety policies and regulations
- Complete and submit required safety documentation and reports
- Identify, communicate, and mitigate job site hazards
- Coordinate with supervisors, project managers, and inspectors
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and quality control
- Train, mentor, and support crew members
- Communicate clearly and professionally with all stakeholders
Work Schedule
- 50–65 hours per week
- 10 days on / 4 days off rotation
- Overtime available per conditions of employment
- Option for year-round work (snow removal) or seasonal work (April–December)
Vacation must be requested and approved by your supervisor.
Requirements
- Extensive experience in sewer and water infrastructure work (mandatory)
- Demonstrated leadership or experience as a lead hand/foreman
- Strong understanding of construction safety practices and regulations
- Comfortable using mobile apps and digital reporting tools
- Legally authorized to work in Canada (required)
- Valid driver’s licence (required)
- Ability to reliably commute or relocate before starting work (preferred)
- Ability to pass a criminal record check (required for some projects)
- English language proficiency (required)
