The Sewer Foreman is responsible for leading field crews in the construction, repair, and maintenance of sanitary and storm sewer systems. This role ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with city specifications, contract requirements, and regulatory standards. The Foreman serves as the primary on‑site leader, coordinating labor, equipment, materials, and communication between the contractor, inspectors, and project management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct sewer construction crews, including laborers, operators, and subcontractors.
  • Plan daily work activities, assign tasks, and ensure crews meet production goals.
  • Train employees on proper installation techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a productive, professional, and safety‑focused work environment.
  • Oversee installation of sanitary and storm sewer mains, laterals, manholes, catch basins, and related structures.
  • Coordinate excavation, trenching, shoring, pipe laying, bedding, backfilling, and compaction.
  • Verify line and grade using lasers, levels, and other layout tools.
  • Ensure all work meets municipal standards, engineering drawings, and contract specifications.
  • Inspect work throughout the day to ensure accuracy, quality, and adherence to plans.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, state regulations, environmental requirements, and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs, production reports, and documentation required by the contract.
  • Ensure proper trench safety, confined‑space procedures, and traffic control measures are in place.
  • Identify hazards and take corrective action to protect crew members and the public.
  • Coordinate delivery and staging of materials, tools, and heavy equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is operated safely and maintained properly.
  • Track material usage and minimize waste to stay within project budgets.
  • Serve as the on‑site point of contact for project managers, engineers, inspectors, and utility representatives.
  • Communicate project progress, challenges, and resource needs to management.
  • Coordinate with other trades and subcontractors to maintain workflow and avoid conflicts.
  • Identify issues related to grade, soil conditions, utilities, or unforeseen obstacles.
  • Recommend and implement field adjustments within contract guidelines.
  • Support project managers in resolving technical or logistical challenges.
  • Plan daily work activities, assign tasks, and ensure crews meet production goals.
  • Train employees on proper installation techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a productive, professional, and safety‑focused work environment.
  • Learn and comply with Indiana’s no‑dig regulations and the 811 utility‑locate process.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License and safe driving record
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience as a pipe layer or in a similar construction role.
  • Familiarity with construction tools, pipe-laying equipment, and materials.
  • Competent and confident operating and reading Pipe Lasers.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as maps, operating manuals, and safety guidelines
  • Understanding of traffic control setup and maintenance
  • Strong physical stamina and manual dexterity, with the ability to lift over 50 pounds and perform tasks that require bending, standing, walking, and climbing

Work Conditions

  • Outdoor construction environment; may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Frequent bending, lifting (up to 75 lbs), standing, and working in confined spaces or trenches.

  • Competitive wage range $30.00 to $40.00 based on experience
