Sessional Instructor, Community Mental Health Worker (OGE) Position Summary

Applications are invited from qualified individuals to instruct in the Community Mental Health Worker (CMHW) Certificate program at North Island College (NIC).

The sessional instructional assignment, up to 80%, involves teaching the practice course CMH 185:
Clinical Practice II for CMHW’s
to a cohort of International CMHW students using a face‑to‑face and online delivery method at the Comox Valley campus.

Note:

Practicum placements will take place in a variety of practice settings and may require travel. Applicants need to have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To plan and prepare learning materials for instructional environments.
  • To use a variety of approaches and materials, as appropriate, in order to address different learning needs.
  • To teach in assigned subject areas and include in courses all required subject matter or skill activity.
  • To direct student learning in a positive, supportive, and caring environment.
  • To be available to students regularly during scheduled office hours and classroom hours, to discuss their progress and other influencing issues. (30 hours/week.)
  • To clearly communicate in writing learning outcomes for programs and courses, and the way in which learners will be evaluated against those outcomes.
  • To design and conduct evaluations or appraisals of students and keep students informed of their progress.
  • To submit grades in a timely manner, in accordance with Policy 4‑14, Grade System.
  • To maintain records of student enrollment and achievement and other records required by the College and affiliated agencies.
  • To be aware of, and work within, College educational policies.
  • To contribute to educational and strategic plans and assist in achieving their goals.
  • To advise the Department Chair of items that need ordering, enrollment management strategies, health and safety concerns, etc.
  • To demonstrate knowledge of computer applications appropriate to the teaching environment.
  • To maintain continuous professional development of competencies and qualifications as required.
  • To participate actively as a contributing member of the College community on committees and other activities, where appropriate.
  • To perform other related responsibilities and duties assigned by the College when course load permits.

Required Education & Experience

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a related content area (e.g., Nursing, Social Work, Psychology, Psychiatry, etc.);
    Master’s preferred.
  • Recent experience in Acute Psychiatric or Community Mental Health.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Indigenous communities, history, ethics, protocols, and pedagogies.
  • Experience teaching adults, preferably at the post‑secondary level.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience using a variety of creative and motivating approaches to stimulate learning within a distributed teaching‑learning environment and classroom.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective team behaviours, support cooperative and effective working relationships, and contribute to shared team goals.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills with ability to plan, prioritize and efficiently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with and willingness to learn online learning management systems such as D2L Brightspace and Kaltura.
  • Proficiency with computer applications and the internet, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
