SUMMARY

The Senior Manager provides leadership and executional oversight for all communications activities, translating organizational strategy into clear and compelling messaging to engage, inform, and inspire a variety of target audiences. They play a critical role in positioning Shepherds of Good Hope as a leader in homelessness solutions and supportive housing by balancing proactive strategy with responsive brand management around key issues of public interest.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and manage communications projects, including developing communication plans, managing resources, tracking progress, identifying and mitigating risks, and communicating effectively with stakeholders throughout project delivery.
  • Oversee the development of communication products and collateral, such as speaking notes, FAQs, web copy, social media posts, signage, presentations, etc.
  • Support and collaborate on joint goals and projects with the Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation, ensuring integration and cohesion between communications activities of each organization.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to identify and promote compelling organizational stories that enhance audience engagement and interest in SGH.
  • Establish, track, and report on key performance indicators and metrics of success for all communications activities to evaluate the effectiveness and adjust as needed.
  • Lead and oversee the organization’s crisis communications planning and response.
  • Drive positive media coverage by building and maintaining strong relationships with local journalists and media organizations.
  • Manage media inquiries, interviews and statements, including identifying and preparing key representatives of the organization. Act as an organizational spokesperson when needed.
  • Monitor and provide analysis of local and national articles of relevance.
  • Represent SGH at community events to promote the organization’s strategic initiatives and values.
  • Lead the design, implementation and adoption of a new corporate intranet, and develop an internal communications approach to support departmental goals.
  • Lead the re-design of the SGH website.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-Secondary education in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working in communications and 5 years of experience in a role supervising others.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to build consensus.
  • Embrace change decisively in a complex environment; knowledge of change management practices is an asset.
  • Demonstrates strong initiative, critical thinking, accountability and transparency in decision making.
  • Strong project management skills, with ability to deliver results on time, on budget and in line with the strategic priorities of the organization.
  • Experience in graphic design, video production and social media are considered assets.
  • Excellent command of the English language; bilingualism in both official languages preferred.
  • Skilled writer and public speaker with experience in network building and community engagement.
  • Strong understanding of the social services system in Ottawa, including funding models and political structures.
  • Knowledge and experience around trauma, mental health and addictions is considered an asset.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The regular working schedule is 8 hours from Monday to Friday, during normal business hours that are typically between 8am and 5pm. This is a hybrid role; employees have flexibility to achieve their results on site or remotely. There is an expectation of flexibility in scheduling work around organizational needs that may occur from time to time during evenings and weekends.
