The Opportunity
The Human Resources Division is presently accepting applications for the Full Time Permanent position of Scale House Attendant, with the Department of Public Works, Waste & Recycling Division (Robin Hood Bay).
Accountabilities
This is a customer service data entry position responsible for monitoring vehicles / waste types entering and exiting the Robin Hood Bay Facility. The incumbent will issue instructions to users and will accurately enter data into the scale software in a timely manner.
This Generally Includes But Is Not Limited To
- Monitoring vehicles entering both the commercial scales and residential drop off (RDO) at the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility.
- Issuing instructions, directions and/or notices to staff and users while ensuring vehicles are processed in a timely manner.
- Checking and/or weighing materials.
- Responsible for the accurate recording of City’s tipping fees.
- Completing data entry into the scale management software; retrieving data and information from the scale software.
- Processing all waste loads entering the RHB facility in accordance with policies and procedures and ensuring compliance with these operational procedures.
- Checking incoming vehicles/loads and identifying unacceptable waste types.
- Checking to identify vehicles with overdue accounts.
- Refusing access to noncompliant users and advising management of related issues.
- Checking to ensure drivers travelling to the commercial tipping face have the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Weighing vehicles exiting the commercial scales and changing tare weights in the scale software system.
- Identifying regulation violations and issuing penalties/surcharges on weigh bills.
- Maintaining a variety of records and running daily reports related to waste loads and users entering the facility.
- Data entry of vehicle license plate and material type into a software program at the RDO.
- Using a two-way radio or other communications devices to coordinate activities at other locations such as residential drop-off (RDO), landfill, recycling facility and/or future compost facility, etc.
- Operating related office equipment.
- Keeping scale house and/or kiosk neat and tidy.
- Other duties as required.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications
- High school graduate
- One year experience in a position of similar responsibility and complexity with computer data entry, data management and customer service.
- Successful completion of data entry tests administered by the City. Must demonstrate working knowledge of Microsoft Excel applications. Applicants must be able to type 25 words per minute.
- Proficiency in computerized data entry and data management.
- Willingness and ability to become proficient in the use of applicable software programs.
- Knowledge of basic record keeping methods.
- Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions accurately and quickly.
- Customer service experience and ability to deal with people in a tactful and diplomatic manner.
- Employees will be required to work at both the weigh scales and the RDO kiosk as needed.
Hours of Work
Shift work.
40 hours per week.
Applicants must be members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 569, or should be prepared to join the Union immediately upon appointment.
