JOB PURPOSE
To provide expertise in the care of the critically ill adult patient utilizing the nursing process and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team under the direction of the unit manager or delegate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Nurse – registered in the Province of New Brunswick
Recent ICU nursing experience or a Critical Care Course accepted by Horizon Health Network
Demonstrated ability to respond to emergent situations and rapidly changing priorities.
Demonstrates and understands the Nursing Process
Advanced physical assessment skills
Ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with patients, families, other departments, and the multidisciplinary team
Demonstrates initiative for personal professional development and commitment to continuing education
Willingness to learn advanced practice skills such as cardiovascular intensive care (CVICU) including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
Highly motivated with the ability to work independently
High regard for confidentiality and advocacy for patients
Demonstrates accountability and good judgement
Ability to perform the duties of the position including patient transfers, sustained chest compressions, and hospital to hospital transfers when applicable
Good work record and ability to attend work on a regular basis.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs patient assessments and identifies needs and problems utilizing an assessment tool.
Formulates objectives specific to the patients’ needs.
Utilizes effective therapeutic communication skills to achieve a helping relationship.
Provides nursing care required to achieve the patient’s desired outcomes.
Provides health teaching and health promotion to patients and their families.
Evaluates outcomes of nursing actions for further assessment and planning.
Identifies needs affecting discharge planning and any potential services required at home.
Provides leadership and support to new employees during orientation.
Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members and within a multidisciplinary environment
Interacts with the unit manager/charge nurse in identifying, planning, implementing and evaluating changes.
Participates in programs promoting quality improvement on the nursing unit.
