Duties
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by performing as a clinical chemistry scientist to ensure the quality of performance and outcomes of results from our highly complex Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified genetic screening laboratories with a principal focus on testing for genetic diseases in newborns.
The incumbent works under the supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (Chemical Sciences), Chief of the Mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), ALD, & CAH Screening Unit and will plan, organize, and carry out scientific research studies of limited scientific scope and complexity.
The Research Scientist I will be responsible for testing activities, which include performing the routine testing of mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) and guanidinoacetate methyltransferase (GAMT) deficiency and other newborn genetic disorders in our high complexity Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified genetic screening laboratory followsquality assuranceguidelines.
Certification

Requirements:

GDSP has as its core functionality the LSB. This laboratory is required to be certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as being in compliance with the requirements of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
The incumbent will be required at the time of appointment :

to hold a valid California Clinical Chemist License, Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Generalist), or a Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist .

The attached duty statement indicates whether this position is eligible for telework. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200, and may be required to report to a CDPH office, when needed. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment.
