Your Opportunity:
The goal of the Cancer Prevention & Screening Innovation (CPSI) Team within Health Intelligence, Evidence and Improvement (HIEI) within Primary Care Alberta (PCA) is to reduce new cancer cases, detect cancer at earlier stages (when improved outcomes are more likely), and decrease unjust and avoidable differences in cancer risk. This goal is achieved by collaborating with partners to develop and translate new knowledge into innovative, scalable cancer prevention interventions to reduce modifiable cancer risk factors in defined populations, including those with high need. Proven strategies are transitioned to sustained, province-wide initiatives. Reporting to the Senior Scientist, the Research III Scientist offers scientific expertise and ensures scientific rigor in projects, while working on collaborative project teams. The Scientist is responsible and accountable for leading and/or providing direction on applied health research initiatives and working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team both internal and external to PCA.
Description:
As a Research III, you will be responsible for leading research activities which generate and disseminate new knowledge that assists with advancing the understanding of health disciplines and various health and medical concerns. Working as the principal investigator, you will collaborate and consult with operational leaders to identify research priorities; develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to resolve complex scientific problems; develop benchmarks, define best practices and determine research methods; and may supervise master’s and PhD-level students. You will also establish and maintain research networks; publish research study objectives and results in various journals; and present research findings at seminars and conferences, both internal and external to PCA.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in a health or science related field from an accredited university. Registration with applicable professional association or college, where required.
Additional Required Qualifications:
A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in a similar applied research environment (considering doctoral and post-doctoral activities; professional appointments) designing and managing applied research projects based in quantitative methodologies, drawing on Implementation Science, integrated knowledge mobilization, population health intervention research or related principles, approaches, and theoretical frameworks. Expertise in designing and executing projects that focus on cancer screening and prevention areas, including modifiable risk factors, screening rate improvement, and integrating social determinants of health, as evidenced by a strong record of both scholarly and non-scholarly experience and output (e.g., publications, conference presentations, internal reports, policy briefs, etc.). Expertise in working with health administrative data (Snowflake), using statistical software (R), and designing and executing surveys and interviews. Experience managing and/or collaborating within multidisciplinary projects involving multiple partners. Ability to plan, organize and manage short- and long-term projects and deliver customer-focused results based on generating rigorous, scientific evidence. Ability to work independently and in team settings. Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and critical appraisal skills. Competencies in core principles of equity, accountability, collaboration, and scientific rigor.
Preferred Qualifications:
Mixed methods approaches. Practical application of socio-ecological models and demonstrated recognition of systemic barriers to achieving population-level health equity. Collaborative community and/or industry research partnerships.
