Your Opportunity

Prof. Frank Wania, in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough, invites applicants for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to conduct research on Environmental Fate, and Exposure Modelling and Monitoring Data Analysis and Risk Assessment.

This opportunity for a Research Associate (Limited Term) is a 2-year term part-time appointment at 70% FTE. The anticipated start date is April 1, 2026.

Job Duties

The position focuses on the development, parameterization, application, and evaluation of multimedia mass balance models and integration of these tools with monitoring and biomonitoring data. The candidate will:

  • Develop and apply innovative reverse application of environmental fate, bioaccumulation and exposure models to predict release patterns and emission sources.
  • Compile and analyze physical-chemical property data including environmental degradation and biotransformation half-lives.
  • Compile and analyze monitoring and biomonitoring data.
  • Summarize data, conduct statistical analysis, prepare presentations, prepare and publish scientific manuscripts, of project results.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop analyses and documentation.

Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Candidate must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, or a related field, with extensive academic research experience in the development of quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs), environmental fate modelling, toxicokinetics and bioaccumulation, in vitro-in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE), New Approach Methods (NAMs), and risk assessment.
  • Over 4 years of expertise in integrating databases with multimedia models.
  • Practical experience with the Exposure And Safety Estimation (EAS-E) Suite platform.
  • Skilled in QSAR modelling, PBPK modelling, Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Chemometrics, Ecotoxicology, Fugacity Models
  • Programming in R, SQL, Python
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in team environments and independently on research projects.
  • Strong scientific writing and communication skills, supported by a robust publication record in international journals (at least 20 research papers).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently on research projects.

Travel

Limited travelling will be required. The Research Associate will have the opportunity to present research at academic conferences.

Notes

This is a part-time appointment at 70% FTE for a term of 2-years.

Prorated hours of work: 25.38 hours per week
