Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of CARTI, the Research Associate will assist with all aspects of aquaponics and seaweed processing research projects in partnership with community partners. The aquaponics initiative involves working with the community partner to fine-tune system design and to support operationalizing the system. The seaweed processing initiative involves operationalizing a mobile seaweed dehydration unit, and optimizing its functionality through iterative testing with community partners.

Other equipment design, operationalizing and optimizing may also be required. Position Competencies – Creates a Positive Climate and Culture;

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct applied research projects as per appropriate methodologies and in alignment with requirements of college and granting agency policies
  • Assemble background information for research projects
  • Organize data collection, analysis and presentation of findings, which may be on campus or in community
  • Supervise student research assistants in field and office work and promote a positive work atmosphere
  • Coordinate with other College employees and external research partners regarding scheduling, equipment use, and other aspects of research
  • Purchase, operate and maintain research equipment
  • Support marketing and promotion efforts of NIC and CARTI as appropriate
  • Develop regular progress reports for internal and external distribution
  • Work closely with CARTI administrative assistants to maintain and monitor project budgets and reporting requirements
  • Lead or contribute to the development of new project proposals and/or grant applications
  • Required Education & Experience

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree in a related field of study; or equivalent combination of Undergraduate Engineering Degree and experience
  • At least two years of recent experience conducting engineering and design-related research
  • At least two years of recent experience developing and implementing iterative equipment testing processes
  • Experience conducting literature reviews and background research using academic databases and library resources and preparing reports on findings
  • Recent experience and familiarity with industry safety and sector-appropriate protocols
  • Familiarity with engineering and applied research techniques and methodologies
  • Experience supervising student and/or junior researchers
  • Experience communicating the results and value of research activities to both lay and specialist audiences via reports, academic papers, press releases and presentations

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (listening, verbal, written)
  • Able to input large quantities of field data into analytical software and conduct statistical analyses
  • Excellent computer and technical literacy and analytical skills
  • Innovative problem solver with ability to seek workable solutions and develop skills as directed by the project supervisor
  • Must be willing to obtain additional required safety and training certificates as necessary to comply with the College’s safety plan and other requirements (e.g. Work Safe BC, cultural safety training, etc)
