Job Summary:
The Dr. Tanentzapf Laboratory, in the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia will be looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 1 to join the team. The laboratory uses cutting edge genetics, imaging, molecular and quantitative approaches to understand how cell junctions contribute to the development and maintenance of tissues.
Organizational Status:
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Tanentzapf.
Work Performed:
Research in the field of Drosophila genetics and molecular biology.
Assist with fly media preparation and Drosophila stock maintenance for the lab.
Perform well established Drosophila experiments including: larval dissection, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, image quantification and PCR
Consequence of Error/Judgement:
Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the supervisors will result in delays and quality of research output, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC.
Supervision Received:
Works under direct supervision in accordance with detailed oral or written instructions; routine duties are carried out under general supervision.
Supervision Given:
None but may explain work sequences to others.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include;
B.Sc. degree in molecular or cellular biology is preferred.
Laboratory experience
Research experience in Drosophila
Practical experience with Drosophila genetics and handling, matlab, PCR, micro dissections and confocal imaging
Practical knowledge of cell biology and organelles.
Knowledge of the Drosophila lymph glands and immune system
Knowledge of the Drosophila nervous system including gustatory receptors
The ideal applicant will also have excellent written and oral presentation skills
