The Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Project Manager, Data Accelerator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

In 2023, the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) invested $125 million in the University of Calgary’s One Child Every Child (OCEC) initiative, an ambitious, transformational child health research program focused on improving outcomes for children across Canada. OCEC unites researchers, health-care providers, community partners, educators, trainees, and stakeholders to accelerate discovery, translate evidence into practice, and build global leadership in child health research and innovation. This role enables effective collaboration across institutional boundaries by working closely with researchers, data scientists, software developers, analysts, clinicians, health system partners, and external collaborators. By fostering shared goals and clear communication, the Technical Project Manager ensures projects are delivered on time and to a high standard, achieving measurable results.

The Project Manager provides end-to-end leadership for delivering complex technical, data, and digital initiatives within the One Child Every Child (OCEC) Data Accelerator and ACHRI. The role provides end to end project leadership, shaping scope, schedules, risks, dependencies, and technical deliverables across multi disciplinary teams and platforms to drive successful delivery.


Summary of Key Responsibilities
(job functions include but are not limited to):

Operational Planning and Project Management:

  • Manage the priority setting, planning and project implementation processes of the data accelerator across the project lifecycle
  • Build project frameworks, technical policies and procedures, evaluation, knowledge management and governance functions to enable implementation and decision making of the overall data accelerator strategy across ACHRI and OCEC
  • Work closely with members and associates of the data accelerator team to scope project requirements, clarify project parameters and boundaries to ensure healthy coordination and linkages across a vast number of interdependent data projects
  • Coordinate the provision of data accelerator services and projects across multidisciplinary teams, including data science, software development, analytics, research operations and external partners
  • For identified data projects, develop and maintain comprehensive project plans, including timelines, milestones, deliverables, dependencies, and resource requirements; and actively manage project scope, risks, issues, and change control, escalating decisions and trade-offs as required
  • Full managerial scope including recruitment, performance management, discipline up to and including termination of direct report

Technical Coordination and Systems Integration:

  • Work closely with technical leads to understand system architectures, data flows, analytics requirements, and implementation constraints
  • Translate technical requirements into actionable work plans and coordinate sequencing of dependent technical activities
  • Support integration of data sources, platforms, analytics tools, and digital infrastructure across research, clinical, and operational environments
  • Facilitate technical working sessions, planning meetings, and retrospectives to support effective delivery, alignment, and continuous improvement

Stakeholder Engagement, Governance, and Communication:

  • Serve as a primary point of coordination for Data Accelerator technical projects across OCEC, ACHRI, and partner organizations
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including researchers, clinicians, academic partners, and delivery collaborators
  • Prepare clear, timely project-level status updates, risk summaries, recommendations, and briefing materials for program leadership and governance committees
  • Support the OCEC data accelerator reporting requirements to meet annual reporting needs

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in computer science, information technology, data science, engineering, health informatics, business, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience managing or coordinating technical, digital, or data-intensive projects
  • Experience in research-intensive, healthcare, or post-secondary environments
  • Demonstrated experience working with technical teams such as software developers, data engineers, data scientists, or analytics teams
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects independently, including risk identification, dependency management, and problem-solving
  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies (e.g., Agile, hybrid, or structured project delivery)
  • Strong ability to manage project timelines and schedules
  • Proven track record of managing project budgets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences
  • Strong stakeholder management and collaboration skills in multi-partner environments
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics methods and tools is an asset
  • Formal project management certification or training (e.g., PMP, CAPM, PRINCE2, Agile certification)
  • Familiarity with data platforms, cloud environments, analytics workflows, or software development lifecycles
  • Experience working in matrixed organizations with competing priorities
