About the job

In this role, you will:

  • provide engineering, planning, administrative advice and guidance on provincial dams and Crown access infrastructure, including roads, bridges and rail crossings
  • lead and/or participate in small to medium size engineering projects, including application reviews and approvals required under legislation by applying technical expertise, ministry standards, administrative procedures, and judgement
  • ensure the provision of safe Crown land infrastructure and projects, under the guidance of one or more senior engineering staff

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • You must be a licensed professional engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
  • You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s licence upon being hired.

Technical expertise:

  • knowledge of theories, principles and practices of civil engineering disciplines related to design, construction, and maintenance in relation to surveys/geomatics, drainage/hydrology, geotechnical/engineering materials, structural, environmental, program planning/asset management
  • knowledge of, and ability to interpret and apply relevant acts to ensure adherence to record maintenance protocols/approvals, and analysis of design specifications/components

Project management expertise:

  • knowledge of project management and contract administration processes to administer projects, monitor contracts, evaluate service providers and review work in progress for adherence to engineering standards
  • leadership skills to oversee projects and provide advice
  • knowledge of economic principles and budgeting to support capital planning and administration of project budgets

Communication and interpersonal skills:

  • ability to effectively communicates with engineers, technicians, staff and senior officials to obtain input, make recommendations, provide technical advice, resolve complex issues, and obtain endorsements pertaining to the work projects
  • presentation skills to deliver technical information to a variety of audiences, such as planning or design proposals, identifying requirements, explaining their effects, seeking recommendations or endorsement
  • ability to prepare correspondence related to public inquiries, briefing notes, and media releases

Analytical skills:

  • evaluative skills to assesses and/or analyzes engineering designs/proposals/contract drawings and documents against established standards and guidelines
  • ability to review proposals to determine their viability and oversee project budgets to ensure project parameters are met
  • problem-solving skills to analyze information, identifies problems, prepare technical reports and provides engineering solutions to support the completion of projects

Computer proficiency:

  • proficiency with relevant computer technology and software used in engineering such as drafting systems, models, statistics, and spreadsheet applications (Microsoft Office Suite 365, AutoCAD, Visual Otthymo, MatLab) to produce deliverables on projects and reports
