The mandate of the Department of Environment and Climate Change is to manage land, water, air, wildlife, and forests. This includes promoting, planning, and supporting the wise and sustainable use of natural resources, and protecting, restoring, and stewarding the environment for the social and economic benefit of all Northwest Territories residents.
You will provide cross-cutting expert advice and analysis related to the environmental assessment of NWT and transboundary resource development projects as well as operational policies and procedures for management of the GNWT’s role in environmental assessments. You will be accountable for identifying and filling in any gaps in the GNWT’s environmental assessment approach so as to ensure that all factors that have been scoped into an assessment have been considered. As the team lead for GNWT interdepartmental EA working groups, your role is to coordinate GNWT participation into EAs and to ensure that departments have undertaken sufficiently rigorous evidence-based approaches across departments in participating in EAs, generating reports and recommendations in support of final decisions for federal and territorial Minister’s approval of EAs. Also, you will play a significant role in the consultation assessment for individual project EA decisions, implementing consultation plans and reporting. Finally, you will support tracking of legally binding post-EA measures and recommendations that government must follow, usually for the life of the project through project closure and remediation.
Typically attained by:
Through a relevant Master’s degree in a discipline or sub discipline of biophysical or natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, geography, environmental science, natural resource management, law, or related fields of study along with three years of experience in environmental assessment or environmental management, legislative and policy analysis and development, and project management.
