One of our Higher Education clients is looking for a Program Director – (Major University, PMP, PgMP)

Length: 6 months contract with possibility of extension

Location: Remote – Alberta (need to be willing to travel for occasional meetings in Edmonton – not more than once a month – or less)

Work Hours: 35 hours/week

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced Program Director to lead its Business Technology Renewal (BTR) Program. The successful candidate will provide strategic direction and governance for a portfolio of transformation initiatives, ensuring alignment with our institutional priorities and strategic objectives. As a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, the Program Director will advance project management maturity by establishing and promoting best practices, while partnering with IT leadership, project teams, and stakeholders to define priorities, guide execution, and achieve measurable business outcomes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy & Planning

•         Govern an enterprise-wide program management framework that unifies multiple projects under consistent governance and oversight.

•         Advise the Director, Business Relationship Management, on aligning the program management framework with Athabasca University's strategic objectives and business priorities.

•         Lead program definition activities with executive sponsors and interest holders to establish vision, scope, objectives, and expected business outcomes.

•         Lead planning efforts with sponsors, implementation teams, and project managers to define deliverables, resource strategies, budgets, schedules, and execution plans for the Business Technology Renewal (BTR) Program.

•         Provide strategic oversight and mentorship to program teams and project managers, driving execution that supports institutional priorities and successful business transformation.

Stakeholder Engagement

•         Identify and engage key program stakeholders, ensuring timely communication and sustained involvement throughout the program lifecycle.

•         Facilitate collaborative workshops and planning sessions with IT teams, university leadership, and business units to align priorities and drive decision-making.

•         Communicate program strategies, progress, risks, and outcomes to university leadership through clear and effective reporting.

•         Monitor program deliverables, performance, and outcomes, proactively adjusting plans to maintain alignment with strategic objectives and expected benefits.

Project Management Standards

•         Provide guidance to the Project Management team in enhancing and standardizing project management processes, templates, and tools tailored to Athabasca University's operational environment.

•         Serve as the program and project management subject matter expert, delivering knowledge transfer and coaching IT staff to promote consistent application of best practice.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

•         Formal Education & Certification

•         Bachelor's degree in information technology, Business, or related field (Master’s preferred).

•         PMP certification required.

•         PgMP certification strongly preferred.

Knowledge & Experience

•         10+ years of progressive experience in IT program and project management.

•         Thorough understanding of project/program management techniques and methods

•         Proven record of establishing PMO/program governance in complex organizations

•         Experience in higher education or public-sector environments is an asset.
