Wagalus Elementary School is looking for a caring, enthusiastic, and dedicated K4/K5 Teacher to join our elementary team. We are seeking someone who is passionate about working with young children and committed to creating a warm, welcoming, and engaging learning environment where every child can thrive.

At Wagalus Elementary, we believe that strong relationships are at the heart of student success. We are looking for an educator who values inclusion, kindness, and cultural responsiveness, and who is excited to help our youngest learners build a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, and social emotional development. This position also involves contributing to school-wide priorities, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in community-based learning initiatives that reflect our Kwakiutl values and local context.


Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Create a safe, nurturing and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Plan and deliver engaging learning experiences that support the developmental needs of K4 and K5 students.
  • Foster early literacy and numeracy skills through meaningful, play-based, and hands-on learning opportunities.
  • Implement school-wide programs, Readwell for Literacy, Saxon for Math.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Use effective classroom management strategies that promote student well-being and success.
  • Incorporate local culture, language and community knowledge into classroom learning.
  • Collaborate with staff to support school-wide goals and initiatives.
  • Participate in community-based learning opportunities that reflect Kwakiutl values and local context.
  • Support the holistic growth of each child- academically, socially, emotionally, and culturally.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes curiosity, independence, and a love of learning.
  • Incorporate formative assessment strategies to monitor and support student growth.
  • Plan for and support diverse learners, including those with Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Use technology effectively to enhance learning and communication.
  • Participate in extracurricular and community activities that promote student engagement and well-being.


Required Skills and Abilities

  • Deep understanding of early literacy, numeracy, and foundational skills in the BC Curriculum.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan for and teach diverse learners using differentiated strategies.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity regarding BC First Nations and Indigenous education initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and classroom-management skills.
  • Experience with research-driven instructional and assessment practices for primary grades.
  • Commitment to collaboration and inclusive practices.
  • Cultural responsiveness and willingness to learn about and incorporate Kwakiutl culture and values.
  • Interest in supporting land-based learning initiatives.
  • Willingness to integrate technology and outdoor learning into daily instruction.


Required Education, Experience, Certifications, and Licences

  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate issued by the Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Degree in Education with training or experience in Primary (Kindergarten – Grade 3).
  • Early Childhood Education/ or experience
  • Evidence of exemplary teaching experience or successful practicums in early primary grades.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).
  • Experience working in Indigenous education settings preferred.
  • Understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture, history, and ways of knowing.


Other Requirements

  • All employees must comply with the Personnel Policies outlined in the Kwakiutl Nation Policies and Procedures manual.
  • Adherence to the Code of Ethics and Governing Values of the Kwakiutl Nation is required.
