Job Description

RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS).

Introduction

The Department of Surgery at McGill University is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join an interdisciplinary research team conducting a clinical trial investigating circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in colorectal cancer liver metastases patient-derived blood samples. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to translational cancer research at the interface of molecular oncology, liquid biopsy technologies, and clinical trial science. The position is located at the Research Institute of McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC).

The incumbent will work on a clinical trial aimed at characterizing and analyzing circulating tumor cells as biomarkers of disease progression, treatment response, and metastatic potential. This work will support the development of innovative liquid biopsy approaches to improve precision oncology and patient outcomes.

Responsabilities And Objectives

  • Conduct laboratory-based processing and analysis of patient blood samples collected through an active clinical trial,
  • Isolate and characterize circulating tumor cells using advanced techniques ,
  • Perform downstream molecular analyses such as single-cell sequencing, RNA/DNA profiling, or proteomic assays,
  • Collaborate closely with clinical investigators, research nurses, and biobank personnel to ensure high-quality sample collection and handling,
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data, contributing to publications and conference presentations,
  • Support regulatory and documentation requirements related to clinical trial research (e.g., SOPs, ethics compliance),
  • Participate in mentoring trainees and contributing to the collaborative research environment,
  • Supervise and train students,
  • Assist with preparation of reports, manuscripts and grant applications.

Requirements

A Postdoctoral fellow is a full-time student currently enrolled in a Canadian University program. The individual must have recently been awarded (within 5 years) a PhD or equivalent. The Postdoctoral fellow will receive a stipend or a bursary from a professor’s grant for research activities that will be performed on a full-time basis. All benefits are administered by the University under which they are registered.

Education / Experience

Education

  • Must hold a PhD,
  • Must be registered as a Postdoctoral Fellow with McGill University.

Field of study: Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field

Experience in any of the following is considered an asset:

  • Circulating tumor cell isolation platforms,
  • Single-cell genomics or bioinformatics,
  • Clinical trial sample workflows and regulatory standards,
  • Flow cytometry, immunofluorescence microscopy, or next-generation sequencing

Prior work with patient-derived samples.

Required Skills

  • Strong background in translational cancer research and liquid biopsy methodologies,
  • Demonstrated experience with cell-based assays and molecular biology techniques,
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary clinical research setting,
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Excellent French and English, spoken and written,
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Ability to work independently or with teams with minimum supervision,
