Reporting to the Client Services Manager, the Personal Support Worker is responsible for assisting residents with the activities of daily living. The primary goal is to promote and advocate for the mental, emotional and physical well-being of each resident and to facilitate their independence.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO):
- Provide for emotional and physical comfort and safety of tenants.
- Respect Residents Rights including confidentiality of tenant information.
- Assist residents with the task of daily living related to personal care.
- Perform intake work for new tenants including a building tour.
- File resident’s binders alphabetically.
- Update Capsule of Life of Residents;
Resident’s List and Mobility List and Medical Admission Record. - Record appropriate information and unsafe conditions in the Communication Book.
- Respond to emergency situations.
- Monitor the Security TV regularly.
- Answer phone calls professionally, record and relay messages to staff and residents.
- Listen and address the requests of tenants in a professional manner.
- Implement harm reduction policies according to the outlined contracts.
- Serve residents in collaboration with Kitchen Staff during breakfast, lunch, supper and snack times.
- Be observant of residents and visitors.
- Write incident and emergency reports.
- Collect rental money after office hours and put in the ‘Black Box ’.
- Record repairs in the Maintenance Book; and clean up in the Cleaner’s Logbook .
- Perform minor clean ups like spills when cleaners are not available.
- Ensure visitors leave the facility by 10p.m. and sign in and out at the front office.
- Monitor the behavior of residents in the facility.
- Address any issues of conflicts among residents.
- Check washrooms, dorms and rooms for their cleanliness.
- Give warnings and notices to tenants according to the policies and procedures of PCP.
- Perform First Aid according to the proper First Aid manual.
- Participate in and promote the Health & Safety Program and emergency procedures report.
- Report any safety issues to the Program Manager.
- Provide residents with a high standard of efficient, polite, helpful and knowledgeable service.
- Attend associates’ meetings, prepare to participate , bring new ideas , improvements to old ideas and any changes you wish to discuss.
- Ensure safe and accurate handling of all Company assets.
- Compliance with WHIMIS and First Aid Course.
- Other duties as assigned.
ATTRIBUTES:
- Be a role model; demonstrate leadership and direction with all unit associates.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks in an efficient and effective manner.
- Ability to supervise and participate in the shift exchange procedures as required , paying particular attention to procedures and security.
- Self-motivated, thereby using own initiative to find tasks to do within assigned responsibilities when all other assigned tasks and priorities are completed.
- Flexibility and versality in a constantly changing environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Post-secondary education in addictions, mental health or gerontology.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with persons with mental illness.
- Previous experience working with seniors is considered a strong asset.
- Demonstrated experience working with persons with mental illness and/or addictions is highly desirable.
- Advanced First Aid Certificate is strongly preferred.
- Completion of WHIMIS and regular compliance with the program is required .
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This industry requires empathy for and an understanding of the needs of seniors and requires a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check including a Criminal Background Check . This position is a fast-paced, challenging, working environment that provides care to seniors and other marginalized populations. The ability to be flexible to meet the demands of this work environment is required for success.
This position works closely with seniors in the day-to-day care and activities of daily living which requires a high threshold for patience and compassion. This work can be stressful and you may encounter challenging behaviours including physical or verbal aggression. This position does require shift work.
