Job Summary
This part-time Academic will teach theory focused on specialized animal sources, barriers and containment, bio-hazards, special requirements of various species and common techniques used on alternate and laboratory animal species as well as the ethics of animal research and of wild animal species as pets. This part-time Academic will also have some involvement in labs, working as a team. This course is being delivered in the Winter Term 2027, January to April.

The lectures are currently scheduled Mondays and Wednesdays from – and Fridays from Labs are scheduled Mondays from – Tuesdays from – and Fridays from – This part-time Academic reports to the Chair of the Department.

VTEC 0225 Laboratory Animal and Alternative Pet Medicine Course Description
This course enables the student to apply the principles of clinical nursing to alternate and exotic pets as well as to common laboratory animal species. It also enables the graduate to enter the research facility and, with supplemental training and experience, prepares the graduate for certification with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences. Topics include specialized animal sources, barriers and containment, bio-hazards, special requirements of various species, handling of and common techniques used on alternate and laboratory animal species, and the ethics of animal research and of wild animal species as pets.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

Qualifications

  • A Registered Veterinary Technician
  • Member in good standing of the Eastern Veterinary Technician Association and the years of companion animal private Veterinary practice
  • Multiple years in an academic teaching environment
  • An understanding of the ethics of animal research
  • Desirable attributes include excellent oral and written communication, collegiality, organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as an excellent ability to work in a team environment.
