The Cytogenetic Technologist performs a variety of tests and procedures on specimens submitted for cytogenetic analyses using cytogenetic and molecular techniques in the context of the organization’s quality management system.

What you’ll do

Assign patient identification number and checks various regional databases for previous relevant analyses

Validate and maintain inventory, and prepare reagents used for test procedures.

Set up and harvest cultures for cytogenetic analyses

Prepare slides and perform various banding techniques such as G-banding, C-banding

Prepare slides and perform fluorescence in situ hybridization

Perform DNA/RNA extraction and molecular techniques

Perform troubleshooting on related techniques to consistently achieve high quality

Perform analyses and prepare computerized images of karyograms.

Prepare final cytogenetic laboratory reports to send out to physicians.

Validate, operate and perform preventive maintenance for a variety of laboratory equipment/instrumentation

What you bring

Qualifications

Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences in Clinical Genetics

Graduation from the post graduate diploma program in Clinical Genetics from the British Columbia Institute of Technology or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

You will also have

Comprehensive knowledge of related discipline.

Ability to organize and prioritize workload.

Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Attention to details.

Ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.

Skill in the operation of related equipment and in techniques appropriate to the designated area.

Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.

Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.

Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).

As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
