This position is responsible for leadership and direction in the development, implementation, sustainability and evaluation of surveillance practice for communicable diseases within and across Manitoba; providing surveillance practice direction, project coordination and performance management within the Manitoba Health Surveillance Unit (MHSU) and Public Health Division. The position systematically monitors all aspects of the public health surveillance cycle, from data quality to risk identification to data trends and dissemination – supporting the prevention of disease and the protection and promotion of health through the provision of accurate and comprehensive surveillance information to inform public health service delivery.

Qualifications:
Essential:
A Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or Community Health Sciences including work experience within a public health setting. Education and formal training in a health discipline other than the above in combination with experience working in epidemiology or surveillance system under the direct supervision of a Public Health practitioner may be considered
Thorough understanding of a Public Health Surveillance Unit’s processes, procedures, and practices as they relate to data collection, entry, and reporting
Knowledge of change management principles and experience leading change with the ability to provide viable solutions to challenges
Experience developing, applying and interpreting policies and guidelines.
Excellent written communication skills
Excellent verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal and client-service skills with the proven ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, develop credibility and build effective relationships at all levels
Political acumen skills demonstrated through using knowledge to identify potential impacts
Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the use of surveillance systems
Demonstrated knowledge of The Public Health Act and Reporting of Diseases and Conditions Regulations
Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to respond to changing priorities and meet deadlines
