Reporting to the Senior Manager Product and Underwriting Strategy, this Underwriting Manager will develop and execute on business strategies to deliver premium and earnings goals and contribute to overall business objectives focusing on the Commercial Automobile line of business.

The candidate should be customer and results focused, have keen analytical interest and the ability to impact and influence. This individual should enjoy operating amidst a dynamic, fast-paced and exciting environment!

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain robust understanding of regulatory requirements, industry and customer trends, and competitive landscape and propose insurance contract changes accordingly for Canada-wide Commercial Automobile Products.
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert for small business underwriting strategy, rules and coverage wordings-related inquiries.
  • Drive the design and development of new underwriting rules to achieve business objectives.
  • Develop provincial regulatory filings where applicable.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of small business underwriting strategy and rules and a solid understanding of customer segments, customer needs, competitive landscape and trends in the General Insurance industry to assist in identifying new business opportunities.
  • Lead the end-to-end management and refinement of small business insurance underwriting strategy and rules, monitor performance, analyze key business drivers, identify areas of opportunity, develop recommendations and drive changes to achieve business and financial objectives.
  • Lead underwriting strategy and rules discussions and collaborate with multiple stakeholders in delivering day-to-day projects and initiatives.
  • Support the development, implementation and understanding of training material related to contracts if applicable.
  • Develop and maintain processes to update advice and guidance wordings for underwriting operations and front-line colleagues.
  • Provide policy wordings interpretation and coverage intentions to various stakeholders across the organization.
  • Develop, maintain, and analyze coverage comparisons with industry standards or main competitors.
  • Develop and maintain Commercial Automobile insurance contract wordings, forms and endorsements as well as any supportive customer documentation, including their French versions in such a way that it enhances the end-to-end customer experience while achieving business objectives.
  • Keep current on emerging trends/developments and grow knowledge of the business, related tools, procedures and techniques.
  • Solve complex problems with considerations to multiple constraints and variables and work with partners to develop solutions.
  • Maintain a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes and guidelines in alignment with risk appetite.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with key internal stakeholders and/or external partners and regulators to develop new products and services.

Qualifications

  • CIP, FCIP, CRM or equivalent insurance designation, or actively working towards an insurance designation.
  • Commercial Automobile Insurance underwriting, wordings and endorsements knowledge and experience.
  • Experience developing and maintaining Commercial Insurance company underwriting manuals – both internal and filed.
  • Experience developing provincial regulatory underwriting filings for regulators.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, financial acumen, and ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise, actionable summaries for an executive audience.
