LABORATORY TECHNICIAN – GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES SUMMARY Perform laboratory testing specific to geological characterization, such as, thin section preparation and (laser) particle size analysis. May also be eligible for cross-training opportunities across other facets of core analysis. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
· Prepare samples for analysis by following prescribed cleaning, division and treatment methods.
· Operate, maintain and calibrate various types of laboratory equipment such as sonic sifter apparatus, balance, laser microtrac analyser, sonic probe and bath, centrifuge and thin section preparation equipment.
· Be skilled in several aspects/services and be familiar with their theory and application.
· Document incoming samples to record receipt and monitor progress.
· Review data to assure analytical results.
· Perform appropriate
quality control
guidelines in concert with QA/QC program that is utilized in the department to assure accurate analytical results.
· Dispose of samples in a manner which compiles with environmental requirements.
· Maintain a safe, clean and efficient workplace adhering to all laboratory safety requirements.
· Comply with all health, safety, and quality management system requirements.
· Contribute to the effectiveness of the management systems, including improvement of performance and reduction of nonconformities. QUALIFICATION

EDUCATION
AND/OR EXPERIENCE
· A high school diploma or equivalent required
· Bachelor of Science (Geology) degree preferred
· Two years of related experience and/or training preferred LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to
read, analyze and interpret instructional and technical materials relating to procedures and safety; and applicable government regulations.
Ability to
write applicable reports and correspondence clearly.
Ability to
effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, schedulers and clients. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to
add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to
compute rate, ratio, percent, and quantities (linear, volumetric, or weight) and to read and interpolate applicable data and tables. REASONING ABILITY
Ability to
solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to
interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule formats. OTHER
