Summary
We are seeking an energetic, detail-oriented Laboratory Instrumentation Technologist with a background in chemistry. Reporting to the Analytical Applications & Development Manager, this role will be focused on operating chemical laboratory instrumentation and reporting results.
The successful candidate is collaborative, organized, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Operate instrumentation such as ICP-OES, XRD, IC, Surface Area Analyzer, Discrete Analyzer, Auto-Titrator, etc. processing samples and reporting results within turn-around expectations.
- Perform and maintain accurate records of troubleshooting and preventive maintenance on laboratory instrumentation.
- Ensure adequate supply of stock solutions, reagents, consumables, and spare parts are maintained to prevent delays in sample turn-around times.
- Accurately prepare standards/calibration solutions, reagents, and samples.
- Meet high standards of quality to ensure validity of analyses.
- Maintain a tidy, organized work area and contribute to general lab cleanliness, including safe waste disposal practices.
- Contribute to authoring, updating, and revising standard operating procedures, safe job procedures, and job hazard assessments for laboratory instrumentation and analysis methods.
- Assist with the identification, evaluation, and control of laboratory hazards and follow safety regulations.
Skills and Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience:
- A post-secondary degree (B.Sc.) or diploma in Chemistry
- A focus on analytical chemistry and one or more years of experience working in a chemical laboratory setting would be an asset.
Core Competencies
- Familiarity with general wet chemistry methods (e.g., pipetting, dilutions, preparation of standards and good laboratory practices).
- Experience operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation.
- Ability to multi-task and operate several projects/tasks in parallel. As this is a process environment, workloads may change depending on priority.
- Attention to detail and a passion for excellence.
- Capable of safely lifting 10 kg on a frequent basis.
- Effective and open communication.
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Highly motivated self-starter, able to work well independently.
- Collaborate effectively with high energy in a team environment.
- Fluency in English both spoken and written.
This is a permanent, full-time, in-person position based out of NE Calgary – local candidates are preferred as relocation assistance will not be provided for this role.
