Role Overview/Description:
A Junior Geologist (Core-Logging and Geotechnical) is an entry-level geoscience professional who supports exploration or mining projects by collecting and documenting geological data from drill cores and assisting in geotechnical evaluations of rock properties. In this role, you will work closely with senior geologists and engineers to log diamond drill core in detail – recording lithology, mineralization, and structural features – as well as measure geotechnical parameters that inform mine design and stability analyses.
- This position is hands-on and largely field- or core-shack-based, ensuring that all drilled core is properly examined, sampled, and recorded with a high level of accuracy. The Junior Geologist helps transform raw core samples into reliable data for resource modeling and geotechnical assessment, contributing to the broader project by maintaining organized records and providing preliminary interpretations under guidance of senior staff.
- This is an ideal role for a geology graduate to gain practical experience in core logging, geotechnical data collection, and the day-to-day practices of exploration or mine geology.
Responsibilities:
- Core Logging: Conduct detailed geological and geotechnical logging of drill core, describing rock types, mineral content, structures, and recovery with precision.
- Record geotechnical information such as core recovery, RQD (Rock Quality Designation), fracture frequency, and rock hardness to aid geotechnical analyses.
- Data Collection & Management: Collect, record, and organize geological data and observations in a systematic way.
- Select representative sections of core for geochemical assay or geotechnical testing as per established protocols, ensuring sample integrity and proper documentation.
- Support Field Operations: Assist the exploration or drilling team by coordinating sample shipments and tracking assay results, and provide on-site geological support during drilling as needed.
- Data Analysis Assistance: Under supervision, help interpret the logged data by preparing basic geological cross-sections or core logs and inputting data into geological databases or software.
- Reporting: Prepare daily or weekly summaries of drilling and logging activities for project geologists and engineers. Ensure that all data is QA/QC’d (quality checked) and accurately entered into the project’s database or modeling software.
- Health & Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and standard operating procedures while working at drill sites or core facilities.
- Learning & Development: Be proactive in learning from senior geologists – ask questions and seek mentorship to improve your logging techniques and geological interpretations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Science, or a related field (required)
- Academic or internship experience in mineral exploration, mining geology, or geotechnical logging is highly beneficial
- Familiarity with core logging procedures and geotechnical terminology. Exposure to logging software or data management systems is a plus.
- 0–3 years of experience in exploration geology, mine site geology, or geotechnical data collection. Experience logging drill core (through fieldwork courses, research projects, or prior jobs) is strongly preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills – able to meticulously record data and maintain accurate logs and databases.
- Good basic understanding of structural geology and rock mechanics (to recognize features like fractures, faults, foliation, etc , and gauge rock quality)
- Willingness to further develop geotechnical expertise on the job
- Proficiency in standard office and technical software (MS Excel, Word, etc ), with the ability to learn specialized geological software
- Effective communication skills and a team player attitude
- Able to work closely with drillers, senior geologists, and laboratory staff. Should be receptive to feedback and eager to improve.
- Physical ability and preparedness to work in remote field locations or drill sites.
- A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel or work on rotational assignments if project sites are in remote areas. Prior experience in a remote exploration camp environment is a plus.
