Job Summary

Reporting to the Utilities Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the configuration, installation, removal, programming and maintenance of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Controls/Automations Systems on the University Campus.

  • Installs, repairs, maintains, calibrates and commissions ventilation equipment, thermostats, sensors, controllers, variable speed drives and related controls equipment
  • Configures , troubleshoots, installs and programs electronic controllers
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks on designated HVAC related equipment
  • Programs building automation systems to meet occupancy needs while maximizing energy efficiency
  • Makes recommendations for upgrading, enhancing and/or retrofitting existing equipment
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
  • Maintains a clean work environment
  • Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

  • Valid Instrumentation Control Technician certificate of qualification with Red Seal designation as recognised by the Nova Scotia Department of Education or an Associate degree in Electronics, Mechanical Systems, Computer Technology, Air Conditioning or similar field
  • Completion of certified trades school program preferred
  • Five years recent and related journey person experience in construction and maintenance areas
  • Computer literacy and Direct Digital Controls knowledge required
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints, and equipment specifications
  • Familiar with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
  • Ability to direct others in a foreperson capacity preferred
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime, respond to after-hours calls and perform standby duties if required
  • General safety, Confined Space, Lock Out/Tag Out, Fall Protection and WHMIS training an asset
