The Niagara Regional Native Centre (NRNC) is an Indigenous-led, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the social, cultural, and economic well-being of Indigenous people in the Niagara Region. Through culturally grounded programming rooted in respect, tradition, and community, NRNC delivers services in justice, health, education, and family support.
The Unity Team – Child Welfare Program works to support and advocate for Indigenous children and families, ensuring culturally appropriate care, strengthening family connections, and promoting community-based solutions.
Position Overview
NRNC is seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable Indigenous Child Welfare Advocate to support Indigenous children and families involved in the child welfare system.
In this role, you will act as a vital bridge between Indigenous communities and child welfare agencies, advocating for the best interests of the child while ensuring cultural identity, rights, and community connections are preserved.
Schedule
- Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- 40 hours per week
- Includes 1-hour paid lunch
Key Responsibilities
- Provide advocacy and support to families navigating the child welfare system
- Ensure the voices, rights, and best interests of Indigenous children and families are respected
- Act as a cultural mediator between families and child welfare agencies
- Support family reunification efforts where appropriate
- Connect families to community resources, traditional healing, and support services
- Advocate for systemic and policy improvements impacting Indigenous child welfare
- Promote cultural awareness and understanding among child welfare professionals
- Ensure children maintain cultural identity and community connections
- Support Indigenous self-determination in child and family services
- Liaise with community partners, agencies, and Band Representatives
- Represent the best interests of the child in court proceedings and hearings
- Prepare, file, and process legal and court documentation in compliance with Ontario regulations
- Attend court proceedings, settlement conferences, and case meetings
- Gather evidence, draft reports, prepare witnesses, and support legal processes
- Coordinate meetings, case conferences, and travel arrangements
- Maintain accurate case files, documentation, and case notes
- Work closely with families, legal representatives, and child welfare workers
- Participate in home visits and investigations alongside child welfare agencies
- Assist in the development and implementation of service and care plans
Qualifications
- Social Service Worker Diploma or equivalent experience
- First Nation Child Welfare Advocate Certificate (Anishinabek Educational Institute) is an asset
- Previous experience in child welfare, advocacy, or related field is an asset
Requirements
- Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Valid driver’s license
- Proof of vehicle insurance (minimum $1M liability)
- Driver’s abstract
- First Aid & CPR Certification (asset)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act and child welfare system
- Understanding of Band Representative roles and responsibilities
- Strong advocacy and mediation skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage sensitive situations with professionalism and cultural awareness
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and community supports
