Position Overview
A U City in Bloom Horticulturist works in a public setting to provide the citizens and visitors of University City with beautiful civic centers, parks and schools. Specifically, they help plant and maintain annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees for gardens and containers in public green spaces. Coordinating and working with other Horticulturists, Gardeners, City employees and volunteers, the U City in Bloom Horticulturist will use the highest standards and up to date landscape management and horticultural practices in a safe and timely manner. Horticulturists are representatives of U City in Bloom and will strive to follow our mission and regularly engage with the public and become a part of this historically tight community. This is a dynamic role that requires adaptability, great social skills, time management, attention to detail and participation in education in the form of tours, working with students and regular writing about plants and green practices. Horticulturists report to the Director of Horticulture.
RESPONSIBILITIES
In this role you will be responsible for the following:
- Provide regular intensive maintenance of gardens and plant material, such as planting, watering, soil preparation, fertilizing, pruning, mulching, weeding and performing other projects in accordance with U City in Bloom approved guidelines and procedures as required or assigned by the Director of Horticulture.
- Ability to design and install new landscapes and gardens
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment
- Supervise and work closely with volunteers in daily care of gardens
- Apply proper pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers as needed complying with state and federal guidelines
- Communicate politely and effectively with the public, city employees and coworkers
- Help install and maintain irrigation systems
- Assist with educational programming and special events
- Maintain up to date and accurate records of work performed
- Support and report to the Director of Horticulture
- Properly and safely use and maintain an assortment of hand tools
- Operate small equipment and utility vehicles (Pro Gator, Trucks, Line Trimmers, Augers, Leaf Blowers, Tractors, etc…)
- Help to train and manage volunteers, gardeners, and new employees in general maintenance of gardens and safe practices
- Monitor plant material to ensure plant health
- Clean up litter in and around garden beds
- Follow U City in Bloom policies and worksite standards
- Write articles and posts for social media

EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of experience in horticultural field such as landscape installation, grounds maintenance or plant production is required.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Licensed driver in state of Missouri – Class E Chauffeur’s License to be obtained.
- Minimum – Associate’s Degree in Horticulture or commensurate experience.
- Able to effectively follow instructions and communicate them to others
- Able to work alone or in groups, in all weather conditions
- Hold or able to obtain Missouri Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License
- Must be able to operate manual transmission vehicles
Physical Demands:
Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds and occasionally more.
- Able to repeatedly bend, twist, squat, kneel and crawl.
- Occasional heavy physical exertion in intense weather conditions.
- Wear all required PPE as required.
