We are currently seeking a talented individual to join our Transportation team. This position is responsible for operating various pieces of light and heavy equipment to maintain highways, recreational roads and airstrips to acceptable standards. Duties include assessing work to be performed, terrain, weather conditions and equipment needs; supervising and assigning work to a crew of employees to ensure maintenance activities are carried out safely, efficiently and within budget. This position is also responsible for the George Black Ferry in the summer months.

Essential Qualifications

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the qualifications below. Selections for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Considerable experience operating a variety of heavy equipment (must include loader, grader, and truck) in extreme weather and snow conditions;
  • Experience with highway maintenance and/or road construction;
  • Experience supporting day‑to‑day operations aboard a passenger ferry
  • Experience leading, motivating, training and directing equipment operators in a remote environment;
  • Public interaction/relations experience including working with various regulatory bodies and stakeholders;
  • Experience with a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Conditions of Employment

This is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following condition(s) of employment:

  • Yukon Class 3 driver’s license with air endorsement
  • Yukon Class 1 driver’s license with air endorsement (to be obtained within 6 months of hire ,
  • Pass TMB Competency assessment on heavy equipment (grader, loader, dump truck, and tractor-trailer).
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate (to be obtained within 6 months of hire).

Job Requirements

This is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following job requirements:

  • Travel throughout the territory,
  • Work in adverse weather conditions,
  • Use personal protective equipment,
  • Personal tool kit,
  • Steel toed Work boots
