Position:

Working in accordance with the Walpole Island First Nation philosophy, policies, and regulations, the Gladue Worker assists individuals who have been sentenced by the courts in meeting the conditions of the sentence. The Gladue Worker will possibly assist individuals who are on bail or referred to Restorative Justice and may also be expected to write Gladue reports/letters for the courts. The Gladue Worker will be attending Chatham Court most of the time.

This position will have a working relationship with 3 First Nations, Aamjiwnaang, Kettle & Stony Point and Walpole Island First Nations, also Delaware Nation at Moraviantown and Caldwell First Nation.

Requirements:

University or college diploma, preferably in social services, human services field.

Experience working in an Indigenous social or justice services environment;

Experience in the legal field would be an asset.

Knowledge of the Canadian criminal procedures including an understanding of the Criminal Code of Canada and other related statutes.

Knowledge of the local First Nations culture and history of the community an asset.

Knowledge of past working experience with community agencies and referral sources that will be in a position to assist individuals in meeting immediate and long-term goals.

Strong computer skills including familiarity with the Microsoft Office 365;

Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented setting.

Must adhere to a high level of confidentiality.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Justice Team Leader, the duties, and responsibilities of the Gladue Worker include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assist individuals at pre-trial and offer support during the trial period and after sentencing.

Provide counselling to family members.

Provide one-on-one support, information, and advice to the individual.

Assist in fulfilling the recommendations made in the Gladue report (with qualified Gladue Report writing training/letter.

Interview family members and others in preparation for writing report (with qualified Gladue Report writing training/letter.

Write Gladue report (with qualified Gladue Report writing training) and letters to the courts as necessary.

Write letters to the courts or outside agencies as required to seek support or treatment.

Refer individual and their families to support programs and treatment centres within the First Nations or outside agencies.

Maintain tracking systems of individual files.

Provide updates as required.

Recommend and implement best practices.

Maintain required written/electronic case documentation and statistics and comply with all Ministry administrative standards and directives.
