Employment Type: Full Time – Permanent

Salary Range: T3, Level 5, $102,000 – $120,000 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity. This position may be eligible to receive a Northern Living allowance. Northern Living allowances are provided based on the location of the position and where an employee primarily works and resides.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Specialist – Hybrid

The Opportunity­­

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist to support our ongoing AGS operations. In this role, you will work extensively with ArcGIS Online and Enterprise Portal to create, review, and publish web maps, web services and hosted layers, as well as develop GIS-based applications and tools such as dashboards, 3D scenes, Story Maps and Experience Builder.

In addition, you will use ArcGIS Pro to create and review high-quality static maps and other GIS products ensuring that cartographic standards and best practices are applied. The role involves managing GIS layer inventories and offering guidance on enhancing geodatabase production and metadata records to facilitate publication of GIS data for various stakeholders. Additionally, the specialist will help streamline AGS processes by automating repetitive tasks through scripting and programming, as well as creating new, specialized tools to enable innovative functionalities when required.

This position will be part of the Geoscience Data Delivery Team, which consists of a diverse group of data, GIS, and publication subject matter experts dedicated to providing and supporting geoscience information to a wide range of stakeholders.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Create, edit, review, and publish static maps, web maps, feature and raster layers, dashboards, 3D scenes, Story Maps, and web applications and tools in ArcGIS Online and Enterprise Portal platforms.

  • Design and develop efficient, readable, and maintainable GIS solutions to support AGS project goals and enterprise-wide initiatives.

  • Use scripting and programming to automate workflows, create efficiencies, and enable new functionality, developing custom scripts (e.g. ArcGIS API for Python, Pandas, etc.) to support evolving business and technical requirements across our processes.

  • Build ETL and automation workflows for publishing and managing geospatial and non-spatial data to centralized databases in the ArcGIS Enterprise Portal and the ArcGIS Online platforms.

  • Prepare and review cartographically correct maps and web-based applications in accordance with organizational and government standards for presentation, scale, projections, schema, metadata, and topology.

  • Review, edit, and manage GIS metadata to ensure spatial information is accurately captured, stored, and displayed.

  • Provide technical support and expertise for ESRI solutions, including maintaining applications, updating base layers and geoscience datasets, and supporting tools.

  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and implementation of GIS systems, guidelines, and processes, providing technical support and documentation to ensure consistency and sustainability. Documenting work package outcomes and keen attention to detail are added assets.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, GIS, geography, engineering or related discipline.

  • 5+ years GIS work experience in industry, academia, or government.

  • Advanced to professional-level proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online is required. Standard-level proficiency in ArcGIS Enterprise Portal is required. GIS database design is an asset.

  • Advanced proficiency with ESRI products such as ArcGIS HUB/Site, ArcGIS Experience Builder, Model Builder, ArcGIS Story Maps.

  • Familiarity with a variety of programming languages (e.g., Python (Arc Py), Java, JavaScript, or R).

  • Experience with spatial data analysis and statistical geoprocessing tools are required.
