Job Overview
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Follow Truck Driver to join our centreline highway pavement marking team. This role involves operating a follow/escort truck as part of a moving road marking crew, supporting safe and efficient long-line painting operations on provincial highways and rural roads. The ideal candidate will have strong driving skills, instinctive knowledge of Halifax and Nova Scotia roads, and the confidence to operate in live traffic environments at low speeds for extended periods. This position starts as a seasonal role with strong potential to transition to full-time for the right candidate.
Responsibilities
- Operate a follow truck as part of a moving centreline marking crew, maintaining safe positioning behind the paint truck at all times
- Navigate Nova Scotia highways and rural roads confidently without reliance on GPS or maps
- Set up and maintain traffic control measures in accordance with Nova Scotia Traffic Control Manual (NS TCM) standards
- Monitor traffic behind the crew and communicate hazards or concerns to the operator
- Assist with loading and managing paint, glass beads, and other marking materials as required
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safety and compliance
- Maintain accurate documentation including daily logs, mileage, and equipment reports
- Communicate effectively with the crew lead, dispatcher, and other team members throughout the shift
- Adhere to all safety protocols during highway operations, including proper use of PPE and traffic control equipment
- Assist with minor equipment troubleshooting or maintenance as needed in the field
Qualifications
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a clean driving record
- Instinctive knowledge of Nova Scotia and Halifax-area roads and highways — you should hear a highway number or community name and know immediately where you’re going; there is no time on the job for maps or directions
- Confidence behind the wheel in highway environments, including extended low-speed operation in live traffic
- Prior experience in road construction, pavement marking, traffic control, or a related field is a strong asset
- Familiarity with traffic control procedures and highway safety standards preferred
- Ability to perform basic vehicle troubleshooting is a plus
- Strong situational awareness and attention to detail
- Physical ability to assist with material handling and field operations as needed
- Snow clearing experience is a strong asset for candidates interested in transitioning to a full-time role
