The Opportunity
The City of St. John's is looking for Facility Service Workers to provide quality maintenance of the Recreation Facilities. Ensuring facilities are kept clean, serviceable and program areas set-up and taken down according to facility schedules.
Accountabilities
- Ensure program areas are set up for the purpose of meetings, recreation programs, birthday parties and special events;
- Clean/Scrub floors, washrooms, change rooms, shower areas and administrative areas;
- Replenish facility supplies such as toiletries.
- Remove garbage and recycling from the facility to outside garbage bins;
- Patrol the facility on a regular bases to ensure the safety and security of patrons and equipment inventory; regular checks of all doors;
- Shovel/salt main entrances during winter months as required;
- Clean and inspect facility equipment and supplies for deficiencies;
- Maintain records

Qualifications
Qualifications – High School Diploma
Specific Skills /Certifications –
- Janitorial Skills such as effectively clean facilities, restock supplies, move equipment.
- OHS and/or WHMIS certification is an asset.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
Relevant Experience –
- 1-year Commercial cleaning/janitorial experience or job-related experience in a similar field enough to attain full competence.
This position is classified as a safety sensitive position. The City of St. John’s has a comprehensive Drug and Alcohol Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.
Working Conditions
- This position will work in a fast-paced and a multi-tasked recreation environment.
- Will be required to work day and evening shifts.
- Some weekend work may be required.
Physical Requirements
- This position will require lifting objects (ie: tables/chairs, gym and pool equipment) between 5-50 pounds.
- Use cleaning supplies (ie: broom, mop and bucket) on a regular basis.
- Program areas require set-up and breakdown on a regular basis.
Hours of Work
Call-in shifts – 7 days per week, between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
